Ora, o nome do poeta é «Luís...

Costa Mota has purposely adopted neo-Manueline stylistic elements in the design so that the tomb and its setting in the Manueline church are harmonious. Details on the side of the sarcophagus relate to Vasco da Gama's voyagesa sailing vessel in the center, the cross of the Order of Christ, and the armillary sphere. (See also the Belem tower for similar imagery.) The lion is associated with Saint Jerome, the order of course for whom the monastery was built.

Prologue
A work of art opens up like a tentwhich is entered by the creator and the spectator. Everything inside the tent is connected with the creator and the spectator. It's impossible to understand anything without the knowledge of both: if you know the spectator, you'll understand only part of the tent; if you know only the creator, then you probably won't understand anything. Furthermore, reader, you have to remember the people depicted in this book are not as they really are, that is, in their fullness, which is also impossible, but from the point of view of a contemporary. In the following prologues and in the book, the author is as much a real person as the other persons and, therefore, if you could, do not relate him to the author who actually exists, limit yourself to what's given in the book, and do not go beyond its limit. And if your mind is bent on relating every literary work to real life, and not with the literary works themselves, then relate it to the age, to the class, anything you like, but not to the real authorbe an educated person. The two prologues that precede Chapter I are meant to disclaim the convention of a narrator with a single mind throughout the book. Like his characters, the author has a before and after, and even a middle.

Portuguese explorer and colonial administrator. The first European to sail to India (1497–1498), he opened the rich lands of the East to Portuguese trade and colonization. Encyclopedia Gama, Vasco da vă skō də gă mə, Port. v¤sh kō d¤ g¤ mə ) , c.1469–1524, Portuguese navigator, the first European to journey by sea to India. His epochal voyage (1497–99) was made at the order of Manuel I . With four vessels, he rounded the Cape of Good Hope, passed the easternmost point reached by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, continued up the east coast of Africa to Malindi, and sailed across the Indian Ocean to Calicut. This voyage opened up a way for Europe to reach the wealth of the Indies, and out of it grew the Portuguese Empire. Immediately Portugal gained great riches from the spice trade. Gama dictated the instructions for Cabral's voyage (1500–1502) to India, and in 1502 he himself led a fleet of 20 ships on his second India voyage. With this force he attempted to establish Portuguese power in Indian waters and sought to secure the submission of a number of chiefs on the African coast. He was harsh in his methods and was not as good an administrator as many of the Portuguese captains who later went to the East, but he was the first, and he was fittingly honored with many tributes and the title of count of Vidigueria. In 1524 he was sent back to India as viceroy, but he died soon after his arrival. Gama's voyage is the subject of Camoens's epic

The Treaty of Tordesilhas was signed on June 7. The previous year Pope Alexander VI had declared that Portugal was entitled to lands east of a line drawn 100 leagues west of the Azores and Cape Verde and that Spain was entitled to the lands lying west of that line. The Portuguese were unwilling to accept this demarcation, and the treaty set the line at some 370 leagues from Cape Verde. Pope Julius II did not confirm the treaty until January 24, 1506.
