A BRIEF HISTORY OF CONCORD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH EATONTON, PUTNAM COUNTY, GEORGIA Including Register of Members and The Cemetery Listing of Ministers This brief history of Concord United Methodist Church has been contributed by The Clopton Family Association, http://www.seanet.com/~clopton/, and The Eatonton-Putnam County Historical Society. If you have any additions or corrections, please contact Suellen Clopton Blanton, bblanton@fast.net The oldest Methodist Church west of the Oconee River, Concord is located in Putnam County (Eatonton) Georgia, on Pea Ridge Road in the eastern portion of the county. In the fall of 1810, Thomas Johnston and William B. Pritchard began building a house of worship. The little log cabin, when finished, was named Victory, but a few years later, the name was changed to Concord. At that time, it was a Methodist Episcopal Church on the Sparta Circuit. The land was donated by John Robertson. The first Trustees were Thomas Jefferson Johnston, Richard Burt, Joseph Turner, James Burt, and Josiah Flournoy. In 1825 a frame structure was built. The present church building was built in 1886 by Thomas J. Winslette. Resting on rock pillars, the floor joists are pine logs hewn flat on the top for stable flooring. The framework is of rough lumber just as it came from the sawmill. Beginning in 1987 an addition was built at the rear of the church. The pews were moved forward, the aisle, widened. Great pains were taken to match the interior and exterior architectures as closely as possible with the older section.

"Today, America would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order [referring to the 1991 LA Riot]. Tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told that there were an outside threat from beyond [i.e., an "extraterrestrial" invasion], whether real or *promulgated* [emphasis mine], that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will plead to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. (21 linear feet) Ms. Coll. 26 American Philosophical Society Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract The Alfred Irving Hallowell Papers (1892-1981) contain correspondence, subject files, manuscripts of published and unpublished works by Hallowell, papers by colleagues and students, research notes kept by Hallowell, with a special emphasis on social organization, personality, behavior, psychology, religion, and folklore. The collection of several hundred photographs provides rich graphic documentation of Hallowell's work among the Ojibwa and Abnaki Indians during the 1930s.
    • Background note Administrative information Background note Pete Hallowell in a canoe, ca.1935 Speck helped Hallowell obtain a Harrison Fellowship so that he could pursue full-time graduate work in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. Hallowell earned an master's degree in 1920, and his thesis research involved fish nets and netting in North America. In 1924 Hallowell received a PhD in anthropology. His dissertation, "Bear Ceremonialism in the Northern Hemisphere," was published as an entire issue of American Anthropologist in 1926. This study reveals the complex system of beliefs and ceremonies about the bear that were practiced among primitive peoples living throughout the circumboreal culture area of northern Europe, Asia, and North America.

NOTES ON CURRENT BOOKS, AUTUMN 1999 The subtitle of this book is "Englishness and the early Garden City movement," Meacham traces the evolution of the garden city concept from its radical origins to its conservative realization. Anyone who has visited Letchworth, Hampstead, Welwyn or any other of the garden cities understands full well Mr. Meacham's argument that the movement's progressive impulses were subverted by rural idealism and suburban high-mindedness. What disturbed friends of mine who grew up in Letchworth in the 1960's was the absence of one of the fundamentals of English culture—the public house. In this, unhappily, the radicals and the class-conscious conservatives were united—no working-class alcoholic excesses were to besmirch these havens of true Englishness.
