21. Faculty
An interesting addition to the faculty in 1972 was Karl Z. Morgan. He had retiredfrom ORNL as head of the Weston M. Stacey, Jr., Callaway Professor
http://www.me.gatech.edu/me/publicat/brochures/NRE/Faculty.htm
THE FACULTY Dr. William B. Harrison, the director of the Nuclear Sciences Division was appointed concurrently Director of the School of Nuclear Engineering in 1962. His quiet charm and persistence made him an ideal choice to get this fledgling department off the ground. Though it expanded fairly rapidly the school remained small enough to retain a close personal contact between faculty and graduate students through most of its existence. The 1964-1965 Graduate Catalogue contains the following listing: W. B. Harrison, Director; Neely Professor N. W. Snyder; Professors G. G. Eichholz, C. J. Roberts; collaborating staff members of other schools and departments: D. S. Harmer, D. W. Martin, and W. Simpson (Physics); H. M. Neumann (Chemistry); W. E. Moody (Ceramic Engneering); F. G. Pohland (Civil Engineering); J. D. Fleming and N. N. Engel (Chemical Engineering); R. H. Fetner (Biology); L. T. Gallaher (Rich Electronic Computer Center); and Special Lecturer D. C. Hamilton (ORNL). Some of those listed were no longer actively involved with NE by that time, but the listing illustrates the kind of campus support. A few years later the NE faculty was fully self-contained through the core curriculum still contained NE-dedicated courses in Physics (Martin, Wyly), Biology (Fetner, Yeargers, Walls), Chemistry (Neumann, Fink) and Mathematics.

By Norman Duncan "Week in an' week out, from year's end t' year's end, I've been blackmailin' the owner o' that ship! Hist! Bend your ear, Mr. Cather. I'll whisper his name. Hist!" He whispered the name of the man. "Hist!" he interrupted. " 'Twas he. 'Twas that same honorable gentleman. He've growed into a big bug since the days o' the Will-o'-the-Wisp. Feel under the pillow, Mr. Cather. Have you got Tom Callaway's Bible? Aye? The paper's within. Take the oath, Mr. Cather, that you'll make a gentleman o' Tom Callaway's son." I did so without hesitation.

The American Mariner cleared Lake Huron downbound at Buoys 1 and 2 north of the Blue Water Bridge around 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening. The Mariner is bound for Ashtabula, Ohio. The Malcolm Marine tug Manitou was escorting the vessel and it is not clear if the tug will continue all the way to Ohio or not. The Mariner is drawing 25 feet and maintaining a normal rate of speed. A large gash on the starboard side above the bow thruster was plainly visible at the waterline.

CHAPTER 12 FDR and the Corporate Socialists At the first meeting of the Cabinet after the President took office in 1933, the financier and adviser to Roosevelt, Bernard Baruch, and Baruch's friend General Hugh Johnson, who was to become the head of the National Recovery Administration, came in with a copy of a book by Gentile, the Italian Fascist theoretician, for each member of the Cabinet, and we all read it with great care.
Mrs. Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor under FDR.
The name Franklin Delano Roosevelt should suggest, but rarely does, a link with Wall Street. Both Delano and Roosevelt are prominent names in the history of American financial institutions. Who was Franklin Delano Roosevelt? Roosevelt's pre political career can be described only as that of financier. Both his family and career before 1928 and his election as Governor of New York were in the business world, more specifically the financial world. Between 1921 and 1928 Roosevelt was a director of 11 corporations headquartered in the Wall Street golden circle and president of a major trade association. The American Construction Council.
It is also reliably recorded that Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party, the first step to the modern welfare-warfare state, was financed by the J.P. Morgan interests; consequently, it should not surprise us to find Wall Street backing Roosevelt in 1928, 1930, and 1932.

I
Mississippi Presbyterian resistance to reunification with northern Presbyterians was as old as southern Reconstruction. Thus in 1873, when James A. Lyon, Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Mississippi, urged establishment of fraternal relations with the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., he aroused vehement opposition. Dr. Benjamin Morgan Palmer of First Presbyterian Church in New Orleans (which was then part of the Synod of Mississippi) protested that official correspondence would sanction the reunion of the Old and New School Assemblies in the North. That reunion, which had occurred in 1870 despite conservative objections, involved, said Palmer, "a total surrender of all the great testimonies of the Church for the fundamental doctrines of grace." He declared that "of these failing testimonies we [the PCUS] are now the sole surviving heir." Five years later, when the PCUS revisited the proposal for fraternal relations with the U.S.A. Assembly, Moses Drury Hoge of Richmond, Virginia, rebuffed critics in Mississippi: "If, after all the great sacrifices of confessors and martyrs of past ages, we alone constitute the true church; if this only is the result of the stupendous sacrifice on Calvary and the struggles of apostles and missionaries and reformers in all generations; then may God have mercy on the world and his church." Although most in Mississippi deserved their reputations as reunion opponents, there were a few who favored denominational rapprochement. Dr. H. M. Sydenstricker of the Presbyterian Church at Water Valley (and uncle of novelist Pearl S. Buck), urged in 1884 that the China missions of the U.S.A. and U.S. churches be combined. The proposal came to naught.
