United States Senate
THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL BUST COLLECTION
History of the Collection
The United States Senate's Vice Presidential Bust Collection honors the presidents of the Senate and forms the institution's oldest continuing art collection. The Senate commissioned the first bust in 1885 as a tribute to Vice President Henry Wilson and placed it in the Vice President's Room, adjacent to the Senate Chamber. In 1886, the Senate passed a resolution establishing a collection of marble vice presidential portraits. After the first busts filled, the 20 niches that surround the Senate Chamber gallery, new additions were placed throughout the Senate wing of the Capitol. Traditionally, each vice president chooses an artist, and the necessary sittings occur after the vice president leaves office. Since 1947, the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration has monitored this progress, and has approved and accepted the final work on behalf of the Senate. The collection chronicles the individuals who have served as vice president and pays tribute to their role in the history of the Senate. It also provides a unique survey of American sculpture from the 19th century to the present.

John C. Calhoun
Mathew Brady photographed John C. Calhoun around the winter of 1849 and used the image as the basis for the production of many additional portraits, including this lithograph from The Gallery of Illustrious Americans . Charles E. Lester, The Gallery's biographer, wrote that because Calhoun was "born during the Revolutionary struggle he was taught to venerate liberty, and that lesson became the guide of his life. In youth, he laid himself on the altar of the Republic, and his life has been a self-immolation." Calhoun devoted most of his political career to protecting the interests of the South while maintaining the Union. He came to Washington in 1811 as a congressman from South Carolina, quickly attaining recognition for his powerful support for war against Britain. Under James Monroe he became secretary of war, and was twice elected Vice President under John Quincy Adams in 1824 and Andrew Jackson in 1828. But in 1832 his support for states' rights caused a rift with Jackson, and Calhoun resigned the Vice Presidency for the Senate. Calhoun remained a powerful and charismatic figure in Washington until his death, the perpetual Democratic opponent of Whig politicians Daniel Webster and Henry Clay Gallery of Illustrious Americans

John C. Calhoun: Nullification in South Carolina
By: Graham Burns
History 4070,University of Georgia,Spring 2004
South Carolina Exposition and Protest was the sole idea of John C. Calhoun. Nullification being the individual idea of Calhoun raises some important questions. One of those questions is; South Carolina as a whole opposed the idea of the tariff, but did they support John C. Calhoun’s idea of nullification? This is a very interesting question and has answers. The lowcountry support for the idea was widespread because of its dependence on the plantation system, but the upstate and those living there did not have that dependence. The idea of nullification as well as the view of Calhoun faced much more criticism and objection as well as a lack of interest in the upstate. The life of John C. Calhoun began in 1782 as the son of an upcountry South Carolina politician. He later ran the family farm at a young age and then headed off to Yale in 1802 where he excelled in the subject areas of Latin and mathematics. As vice president Calhoun did not have a very good relationship with Andrew Jackson and his leaving of that office was just the start of his complicated story. It is important to know that Calhoun himself was not the leader in speaking out against the tariff or even doing something about it. The real leaders included the likes of Robert J. Turnbull, Robert Barnwell Rhett, Francis W. Pickens, and Robert Y. Hayne, along with many others.

THE CAUSES BY WHICH THE UNION IS ENDANGERED
Sen. John C. Calhoun
March 4, 1850 John C. Calhoun (1782 - 1850), who served the United States as a Cabinet officer in the 1820's and 1840's, as Vice-President under John Quincy Adams, and as Congressman and Senator from South Carolina at other times from 1810 to his death in 1850, was perhaps the most famous architect of the Southern states rights position in the antebellum era. This speech - the last one he gave in the Senate, actually delivered by James Mason of Virginia because Calhoun was too weak to even read it - articulates his final thoughts on the emerging sectional crisis. He died just a few weeks after this speech was made. An interesting website, with other speeches and writings of Calhoun, can be found here. To this question there can be but one answer, - that the immediate cause is the almost universal discontent which pervades all the States composing the Southern section of the Union. This widely-extended discontent is not of recent origin. It commenced with the agitation of the slavery question, and has been increasing ever since. The next question, going one step further back, is - What has caused this widely diffused and almost universal discontent? One of the causes is, undoubtedly, to be traced to the long-continued agitation of the slave question on the part of the North, and the many aggressions which they have made on the rights of the South during the time. I will not enumerate them at present, as it will be done hereafter in its proper place.
