Quotes of the Day for 1 May 2005 - Wild Women
Mary Harris "Mother" Jones was born at Cork, Ireland on this day in 1830. She came from a family of agitators (against the British) who fled to America where she became a militant and effective labor organizer. Martha "Calamity" Jane Cannary was born at Princeton, Missouri on this day in 1852, and faced the Sioux, a smallpox epidemic, and the Wild West in men's clothing and plenty of attitude. To celebrate their spirit, here are a few quotes from wild women. If women want any rights they had better take them, and say nothing about it.
Harriet Beecher Stowe I used to be Snow White - but I drifted.
Mae West I'm the foe of moderation, the champion of excess. If I may lift a line from a die-hard whose identity is lost in the shuffle, 'Id rather be strongly wrong than weakly right.'
Tallulah Bankhead Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.
Mary Harris "Mother" Jones If I'd observed all the rules, I'd never have got anywhere.
