Martha Jane Canary
Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Canary 1852-1903)) was born in Princeton, Missouri May 1, 1852. Her love of horses, hunting and outdoor adventures made her one of the best riders and shooters in the West by the age of 13. In 1870 Calamity became a scout for General Custer. Her reputation as the most daring rider and one of the best shooters in the West made many fearful of her.
The Name
On their way back to Goose Creek, Wyoming (now Sheridan) Captain Egan was shot during an ambush by the Indians. She rushed back, lifted the Captain onto her horse, and rode as hard as she could to get him back to the fort to save his life. The grateful Captain named her Calamity Jane.
In 1891 she married Clinton (Charley) Burke, a hack driver, after living with him for seven years. Beginning in 1895 she toured with Wild West shows throughout the Midwest. In 1901 she appeared at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, but was fired for her erratic behavior and alcoholism. Her last years were marked by poverty, and she died in Terry, near Deadwood, on August 1, 1903. She was buried in Deadwood beside Wild Bill Hickok.

Jane was devastated by the murder of her close companion Wild Bill Hickok. She left Deadwood saying, "The direction of this camp makes me f*cking sick, and it bores the shit out of me." But Jane remains connected to Deadwood through people like Charlie Utter and Sophie Metz, and continues to drift in and out of the community.

Calamity Jane
Amerikaanse avonturierster

by Marthy Cannary Burk, 1852-1903 LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF CALAMITY JANE
BY HERSELF My maiden name was Marthy Cannary. I was born in Princeton, Missourri, May 1st, 1852. Father and mother were natives of Ohio. I had two brothers and three sisters, I being the oldest of the children. As a child I always had a fondness for adventure and out-door exercise and especial fondness for horses which I began to ride at an early age and continued to do so until I became an expert rider being able to ride the most vicious and stubborn of horses, in fact the greater portion of my life in early times was spent in this manner. Mother died at Black Foot, Montana, 1866, where we buried her. I left Montana in Spring of 1866, for Utah, arriving at Salt Lake city during the summer. Remained in Utah until 1867, where my father died, then went to Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, where we arrived May 1, 1868, then went to Piedmont, Wyoming, with U.P. Railway. Joined General Custer as a scout at Fort Russell, Wyoming, in 1870, and started for Arizona for the Indian Campaign. Up to this time I had always worn the costume of my sex. When I joined Custer I donned the uniform of a soldier. It was a bit awkward at first but I soon got to be perfectly at home in men's clothes. Was in Arizona up to the winter of 1871 and during that time I had a great many adventures with the Indians, for as a scout I had a great many dangerous missions to perform and while I was in many close places always succeeded in getting away safely for by this time I was considered the most reckless and daring rider and one of the best shots in the western country.

              The truth about Calamity Jane
Doris Day made her a gender-bendin', pistol-packin' songthrush. Jane Russell stripped her down to her bloomers. But who was the real Calamity Jane?
              By David Thomson
              Published: 03 October 2004
No one really knows why Martha Jane Cannary was called "Calamity Jane". Was she always getting into trouble? Or was she in the habit of exaggerating her troubles? Least gallant of all, there is the possibility that anyone looking as lean, mean, tough and "male" as Martha Jane (1852-1903) had a God-given "calamity" all her own. Whichever way you look at it, it's hard to believe the name had anything to do with what Doris Day may have meant when she sang "Once I had a Secret Love" in the 1953 film Calamity Jane - unless harbouring the love that dared not speak its name was itself regarded as a "calamity" in Dakota territory. I enjoyed the beginning and even part of the middle but the book just kept going for too long. It was rambling, and not in a good way, and barely seemed to have a point. The ending was just weird, though I had an inkling as to what it would be. (But then I had never heard of the rumors that the ending is apparently based on so perhaps that's why I found it weird.) I think that you could find a far better book about the same people if you just want to read a story about Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill, and others. Not McMurtry's best, but fun to read anyway
