Bibliographic Notes: First published in c1900.
My maiden name was Marthy Cannary. I was born in Princeton, Missourri, May 1 st , 1852. Father and mother were natives of Ohio. I had two brothers and three sisters, I being the oldest of the children. As a child I always had a fondness for adventure and out-door exercise and especial fondness for horses which I began to ride at an early age and continued to do so until I became an expert rider being able to ride the most vicious and stubborn of horses, in fact the greater portion of my life in early times was spent in this manner. Mother died at Black Foot, Montana, 1866, where we buried her. I left Montana in Spring of 1866, for Utah, arriving at Salt Lake city during the summer. Remained in Utah until 1867, where my father died, then went to Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, where we arrived May 1, 1868, then went to Piedmont, Wyoming, with UP Railway. Joined General Custer as a scout at Fort Russell, Wyoming, in 1870, and started for Arizona for the Indian Campaign. Up to this time I had always worn the costume of my sex. When I joined Custer I donned the uniform of a soldier. It was a bit awkward at first but I soon got to be perfectly at home in men's clothes. Was in Arizona up to the winter of 1871 and during that time I had a great many adventures with the Indians, for as a scout I had a great many dangerous missions to perform and while I was in many close places always succeeded in getting away safely for by this time I was considered the most reckless and daring rider and one of the best shots in the western country.

Little is known of her early life beyond the fact that she moved with her parents to Virginia City, Mont., in 1865 and that she grew up in mining camps and rough frontier communities. In 1876 she appeared in Deadwood, S.Dak., dressed in men's clothes and boasting of her marksmanship and her exploits as a pony-express rider and as a scout with Custer's forces. In her later years she toured the West in a burlesque show and appeared at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. Name: Calamity Jane Variant Name: Martha Jane Cannary Birth Date: May 1, 1852 Death Date: August 1, 1903 Place of Birth: Princeton, Missouri, United States Place of Death: Terry, South Dakota, United States Nationality: American Gender: Female Occupations: frontierswoman Calamity Jane Main Biography Martha Jane Cannary, known as Calamity Jane (1852-1903), was a notorious American frontier woman in the days of the Wild West. As unconventional and wild as the territory she roamed, she has become a legend. The most likely date of Jane Cannary's birth is May 1, 1852, probably at Princeton, Missouri. When she was 12 or 13, the family headed west along the Overland Route, reaching Virginia City, Montana, five months later. En route Jane learned to be a teamster and to snap 30-foot bullwhackers. Her father died in 1866 and her mother died a year later. Late in 1867 Jane was in Salt Lake City. Until the early 1870s nothing more is known of Jane. Then she appeared at Rawlins, Wyo., where she dressed and acted like a man and hired out as a mule skinner, bullwhacker, and railroad worker. "Calamity" became part of her name; she was proud of it.

(Martha Jane Burke; ), frontierswoman. Known for dressing and acting like a man in her buckskin suits and wide-brimmed hats, Calamity Jane was an expert marksman, mule skinner, and railroad worker. She scouted for Gen. George Armstrong Custer and was a companion of "Wild Bill" Hickok . The origin of her nickname is uncertain; it may have derived from her skill with a gun or from her hard-luck experiences.
