Novelist Born in Runcorn, Cheshire, to a Manx father and a Cumberland mother and brought up in Liverpool; however spent considerable time in his youth with uncle's family in Ballaugh and Manx grandmother. Also spent some time helping a schoolmaster uncle at Kirk Maughold. He was "befriended" by D. G. Rossetti and spent the last few months of Rossetti's life as his housemate. He wrote a book, Recollections of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1852). He edited an anthology, Sonnets of Three Centuries (1882), in which all three Rossettis and W. B. Scott were well represented. He wrote many novels of wide popularity and a somewhat sensational reputation. Many of them centered in the Isle of Man (where he died): they include The Shadow of a Crime The Bondman The Manxman The Eternal City The Prodigal Son The White Prophet Click on the letter C to go back to the list of names

    Thomas Henry Hall Caine, 1853-1931
Born at Runcorn, Cheshire, 14 May 1853, to a Manx father and a Cumberland mother and brought up in Liverpool; however spent considerable time in his youth with uncle's family in Ballaugh and Manx grandmother. Also spent some time helping a schoolmaster uncle at Kirk Maughold. Consumate self publicist and not always entirely truthful - not for nothing did Vivien Allen choose the punning subtitle "Portrait of a Victorian Romancer" for her biography. Hall Caine's own biography "My Story" contains few hard facts and where his early connection with the Island is concerned is somewhat misleading. At times he postured as more Manx than the Manx who, though they elected him MHK for many years, were deeply suspicious of him and never warmed to him. Caine would appear to have recognised this for in his note to " Recollections of Rossetti " he writes of this Manx Schoolmastering period 'I had few books of poetry and I had none of fiction, for what we afterwards called the Nonconformist conscience had already penetrated our bleak solitude and our seniors had no place for the authors who (as an unforgiving Manxman in later years said of myself) "earned their living by telling lies".' Samuel Norris, another comeover, who had personal memories of Hall Caine barely conceals his dislike in his joint biography of Caine and the undoubtedly greater T.E.Brown

    Recent work in critical theory
Style , Winter, 1998 by William Baker Kenneth Womack This alphabetically arranged bibliography annotates recently published books and is based primarily on materials coming into the Northern Illinois University libraries between August 1997 and August 1998. Inclusion does not mean exclusion in a subsequent Style bibliography or review. Our remarks will simply convey the basic content of each item as objectively as possible. The publication dates for most of the items are 1997 and 1998, although some monographs have earlier imprints. As noted in previous surveys of "Recent Work in Critical Theory," it has been difficult to arrange systematically in subject categories the wealth of recent material in the field of critical theory; some placement is ineluctably arbitrary. While only too aware of the limitations of categories, we have adopted the following rubrics: 1. General; 2. Semiotics, Narratology, Rhetoric, and Language Systems; 3. Postmodernism and Deconstruction; 4. Reader-Response and Phenomenological Criticism; 5. Feminist and Gender Studies; 6. Psychoanalytic Criticism; 7. Cultural and Historical Criticism.
