Sir Thomas Henry Hall Caine (1853-1931) was a best selling writer. His novels, some of which were set in the Isle of Man, sold by the million, were made into plays and films, and were translated into many languages. It is perhaps surprising that today he is hardly known and that none of his books are currently in print. Hall Caine was born of Manx parentage at Runcorn, Cheshire. He moved permanently to the Isle of Man in 1895 and was elected to the House of Keys in 1903. He died at his home at Greeba Castle on 31 August 1931.

Laid in the ledger is a separate leaf for the Isle of Man Bank, Ltd., 1931, Sept. 2-Oct. 16. Information in the ledger concerns deeds of conveyance which date from 1874. Literary Earnings and Royalties are summarized under the heading of Sundries in the ledger. Some ephemeral material is included. Collection size: 10 items Additions to the Caine mss., 1882-1926, consist primarily of letters from novelist and playwright, Hall Caine, 1853- 1931, to various friends, writers, and business associates.
