Abraham Cahan, the "Forward," and Me
Lipsky, Seth
An editorial ghost hauntsand helpsan illustrious Jewish newspaper. ...You could feel the chill come over the room... ...As we settled in at a table of smoked fish and other delights, I mentioned an editorial the Wall Street Journal had run a few days earlier asserting that the ideal way to deal with immigration in America was to pass a constitutional amendment mandating open borders... ...He concluded: "'My country, right or wrong' is not a sentiment I ever believed I'd see expressed in a newspaper founded in the spirit of Eugene Victor Debs and Norman Thomas... ...So I looked up what the Forward had had to say about another outrage in Hebron many decades earlier... ...What I got, instead, was an extraordinarily admiring eulogy... ...In addition to editing and writing for the Forward, the indefatigable Cahan composed a five-volume autobiography in Yiddish and a number of remarkable works of English fiction, including The Rise of David Levinsky (1917... ...In response, we printed the Forward's editorial of June 27, 1950, the morrow of the attack by Communist North Korea on the South...

This study tends to be superficial, and its format makes it exceedingly repetitious. Individuals are often not identified and their work is not sufficiently explored. This could have made a stronger contribution to the literature had it been written as an in-depth article, with the series of pieces from the Forward simply reprinted as a separate publication.

Effects of the Press on Spanish-American Relations in 1898
By John Baker Contents
Background February 1898 On the Way to War Ethnic Minorities, War and the Press ... Bibliography The Spanish-American War of 1898 marked a turning point in American history. Within a few years of the war's end, the United States was a world power, exercising control or influence over islands in the Caribbean Sea, the mid-Pacific Ocean and close to the Asian mainland. The conflict has sometimes been called "The Newspaper War," largely because the influence of a sensationalist press "Yellow Journalism" (see Yellow Journalism sidebar) supposedly brought on the fighting. Key to a sense of rage propagated by the media were the events of February 1898, which culminated with the destruction of an American battleship, the USS Maine , in a Cuban harbor. The media sensationalized the events in February and the two months following until war began, prompting a debate that still rages whether the press merely reflected the publi's desire for war, or, in fact, actually fed it. (Above, a late February 1898 San Francisco Examiner front page).

"State Street, Chicago," photograph, 1905 George Bellows, New York , oil on canvas, 1911
The images offered here suggest something of the nature of that transformation and what it meant to urban dwellers. The photograph of State Street in Chicago is by photographer Carleton H. Graves, whose company produced hundreds of stereographic images for popular entertainment. The painting New York is by George Bellows (1882-1925). Born in Columbus, Ohio, he attended Ohio State University. In 1904 he left the University without a degree to study art in New York. There he became a pupil of Robert Henri, who imparted to his students the belief that art must connect with harsh reality of city life. His students learned that lesson well and went on to create what later became known as the "Ashcan School." According to critic Robert Hughes, Bellows paintings display the "charm of ebullience and vulgarity." His depictions of New York, especially of the crowded streets of lower Manhattan, "celebrated . . . [Theodore] Roosevelt's 'strenuous life' (see EMPIRE) in a big-boned, muscular America." A comparison of these works could provoke among your students a profitable discussion on the differences between photography and painting. 1 page.
