Butler, Samuel (1835-1902) The English novelist Samuel Butler had a predilection for intense male friendships, which is reflected in several of his works. Butler was born on December 4, 1835, at Langar Rectory near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England. He was both the son and grandson of Anglican clergy. He received his education at Shrewsbury School and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in 1858. Sponsor Message.
Although Samuel and his family had made plans for him to enter the ministry, he began to have doubts about his religion and ordination. After Cambridge, he worked briefly among the poor in London as a lay minister while trying to decide his future. In 1860, he emigrated to New Zealand and became a successful sheep rancher while publishing articles in the local press. Four years later, he returned to England, where he studied to become a painter and continued his writing. Much of Butler's work concerns his two primary interests, religion and evolution. He was particularly intrigued by the writings of Charles Darwin, an interest reflected in the extremely successful

Career
Following graduation from Cambridge, he lived in an low-income parish in London during and as preparation for his ordination to the Anglican clergy ; there he discovered that baptism made no apparent difference to the morals and behaviour of his peers and began questioning his faith . This experience would later serve as inspiration for his work The Fair Haven New Zealand , a British colony since , so as to put as much distance as possible between himself and his family. He wrote about his arrival and his life as a sheep farmer on Mesopotamia Station in A First Year in Canterbury Settlement
He returned to England in Fleet Street ), where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1872 his satirical novel Erewhon appeared anonymously, causing some speculation as to the identity of the author; when Butler revealed himself as the author, some expressed disappointment that none of the more famous personages speculated about had written it.

Samuel Butler Quotes
Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on. All progress is based upon a universal innate desire on the part of every organism to live beyond its income. Friendship is like money, easier made than kept. The man who lets himself be bored is even more contemptible than the bore. Any fool can tell the truth, but it requires a man of some sense to know how to lie well. The three most important things a man has are briefly, his private parts, his money, and his religious opinions. He has spent his life best who has enjoyed it most. God will take care that we do not enjoy it any more than is good for us. A definition is the enclosing a wilderness of idea within a wall of words. To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious. Half the vices which the world condemns most loudly have seeds of good in them and require moderate use rather than total abstinence. Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them. A friend who cannot at a pinch remember a thing or two that never happened is as bad as one who does not know how to forget.

Name: Samuel Butler Birth Date: December 4, 1835 Death Date: Place of Birth: Langar, Nottinghamshire, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: novelist, essayist Samuel Butler Main Biography The English novelist and essayist Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was a critic of established religious, social, and scientific ideas. Samuel Butler was born on Dec. 4, 1835, in Langar, near Bingham, Nottinghamshire, the son of the local vicar. In a time of common paternal absolutism, his childhood seems to have been bleak and graceless. After taking a degree at Cambridge, he came into open conflict with his father over the question of his future profession, and at last he emigrated to New Zealand to become a sheep farmer. But though free of his father, he was not free of revolt, and the spirit of resentful rebelliousness marked much of his later life. In New Zealand he read Charles Darwin's Origin of Species and wrote a series of newspaper articles setting forth Darwin's ideas and ingeniously applying the evolutionary hypothesis to machines. Having made a modest fortune, he returned to England in 1864.

Others in this category include G.K. Chesterton and H.L. Mencken. Butler's ideas however deserve to be remembered . George Bernard Shaw wrote in a preface to Major Barbara It drives me almost to despair of English literature when one sees so extraordinary a study of English life as Butler's posthumous "Way of All Flesh" making so little impression that when, some years later, I produce plays in which Butler's extraordinarily fresh, free and future-piercing suggestions have an obvious share, I am met with nothing but vague cacklings about Ibsen and Nietzsche.... Really the English do not deserve to have great men. Although The Way of All Flesh (1903) has indeed become recognized as a modern classic since Shaw wrote this, Butler's name still does not trip off the public tongue as easily as Ibsen, Nietzsche, Dickens, Darwin or a dozen other lights of the Victorian era. His writings seem too wrapped in the intellectual concerns of his time. But if you do venture into his works with the intention to see past those trappings, you find not only a lively wit but a depth and breadth that makes his thinking applicable to today. The questions of religion versus secularism, the organization of society, and the idea of progress are still with us today and we could still use his "fresh, free and future-piercing suggestions".

Foundations of Business Thought Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English novelist. He was born in Nottinghamshire, and educated at the University of Cambridge. His father was Rev. Thomas Butler and his grandfather was headmaster and bishop, Dr. Samuel Butler. Butler was raised in a religious environment that was intolerant of curiosity. In his early years, Butler traveled to Italy. He loved Italy so much that it came to be known as his "second country". While in Italy he was first introduced to the music of Handel which became a powerful influence in his life. He was also greatly influenced by the works of Homer. While Butler was at Cambridge in 1854, he fully expected to be ordained and to follow in his father's footsteps. However, he began to have doubts about the ministry. After he finished school at Cambridge and instead of being ordained, Butler immigrated to New Zealand where he was a successful sheep rancher from 1860 to 1864. He describes his life in New Zealand as one of working "like a common servant" in semi-solitude. He considered New Zealand the place that gave him a strong, robust sense of values. Butler supplemented his living by occasionally publishing some of his writing. During this time, Butler read Darwin's The Origin of Species . It appealed to Butler profoundly. In 1864, Butler returned to England where he lived for thirty-eight years until his death. During his time in England he began his life as a painter. As a painter he had considerable success. However, he soon began to write again. Butler is best known for his satirical works. In
