Joseph Butler (1692 - 1752) Joseph Butler grew up in a Presbyterian family, but in 1715 he conformed to the Church of England and entered Oriel College, Oxford. Three years later he received his degree and was ordained, becoming the preacher at the Rolls Chapel. He remained in this post until 1726, the year that his Fifteen Sermons Preached at the Rolls Chapel were published. The sermons are, in fact, a full articulation of his moral philosophy. In 1736 he published his Analogy of Religion ... there is a superior principle of reflection or conscience in every man, which distinguishes between the internal principles of his heart, as well as his external actions: which passes judgment upon himself and them; pronounces determinatively some actions to be in themselves just, right, good; others to be in themselves evil, wrong, unjust: which, without being consulted, without being advised with, magisterially exerts itself, and approves or condemns him the doer of them accordingly.... It is by this faculty, natural to man, that he is a moral agent, that he is a law to himself....(Sermon 2) It is come, I know not how, to be taken for granted, by many persons, that Christianity is not so much a subject for enquiry but that it is, now at length, discovered to be fictitious. And accordingly they treat it as if in the present age this were an agreed point among all people of discernment, and nothing remained, but to set it up as a principal subject of mirth and ridicule, as it were by way of reprisals, for its having so long interrupted the pleasures of the world. While holding various church appointments, he wrote his major work, The Analogy of Religion (1736), in which he argued that objections against revealed religion may also be levelled against the whole constitution of nature. He was made Bishop of Bristol (1738), Dean of St Paul's (1740), and Bishop of Durham (1750). Biographies Classics Library A Study Of Our Decline ... Home

Joseph Butler
Joseph Butler was born at Wantage on 18 May 1692 and died at Bath, where he had gone for his health, on 16 June 1752. He was buried in Bristol Cathedral. The son of a retired Presbyterian linen merchant, Butler was educated at a dissenting academy in Tewkesbury. He showed precocious philosophical talent, writing a series of brilliantly insightful letters to Samuel Clarke while still a student there. He eventually persuaded his father to allow him to conform to the Established Church and went up to Oriel College, Oxford, where he found himself, as he wrote in a letter to Clarke, obliged to ‘mis-spend so much time here in attending frivolous lectures and unintelligible disputations’. He eventually acquired his BA in 1718, BCL in 1721 and DCL in 1733. His first ecclesiastical appointment, in 1719, was preacher at the Rolls Chapel in London: a selection of the sermons he delivered there was published in 1726, under the title Fifteen Sermons . He became rector of Stanhope in 1725, residing there until 1733, during which time he wrote the Analogy of Religion . He returned to London to become Clerk of the Closet to Queen Caroline. Her death-bed request to the Archbishop of Canterbury that he ‘take care’ of Butler was answered by Butler’s promotion to the poorest see in England, that of Bristol. In 1740 he became also Dean of St Paul’s, a position he held for ten years. At this point he resigned Stanhope. In 1747 he declined the archbishopric of Canterbury, reportedly saying that ‘it was too late for him to try to support a falling Church’, but accepted the bishopric of Durham in 1750. His character comes through the various anecdotes about him as reserved, thoughtful, morally upright, and generous in charitable works.

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies JOSEPH BUTLER (1692 - 1752) In 1726, the year in which he published his important Fifteen Sermons , Butler was appointed to the rectory at Stanhope in Weardale, the 'golden rectory' as it was known in the North. Situated in lead-mining country, the living was a rich one, and several of the incumbents went on to occupy the bishopric. Little is known of his secluded life at Stanhope, beyond his great charity and his habit of riding a black pony very fast. When Queen Caroline inquired whether he was dead, Archbishop Blackburne replied: 'He is not dead, Madam, but buried.' Nevertheless, these years at Stanhope were to produce, in 1736, his Analogy of Religion , the greatest theological work of his time, and one of the most original of any period. Butler became Bishop of Durham in 1750. Horace Walpole, a true product of the age of reason, characteristically remarked that he had been wafted to his see in a cloud of metaphysics and remained in it thereafter. AS Revision Notes: Conscience These notes are summary points from the more detailed notes found on the main A Level Religious Studies page. Introduction Conscience is understood to both reflect on and direct behaviour. These two aspects of conscience are known as:
  • Judicial Conscience: Critically assessing and evaluating one’s past actions. Legislative Conscience: Deciding what needs to be done in the future.
Both these aspects of conscience can be found in the Bible. Conscience in the Bible There is no Hebrew (Old Testament) word for conscience. The closest to it is the word for ‘heart’: ‘Oh that today you would hear his voice and not harden your heart.’ (Psalm 95:8) In Greek (New Testament) the word for conscience is ‘suneidesis’ ( literally means ‘to know’). The Apostle Paul uses it to refer to those who ‘know’ the will of God as that which is intended to rule their lives (i.e. believers):
  • This means they can have a sense of guilt before God (Hebrews 10:22). That they have the ability to reason good and bad acts (Romans 9:1).
