Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821 - 1890)
Burton was raised in France and Italy and his talent for languages meant that he was fluent in four languages and two dialects before he was twenty: he would eventually learn 25 languages and another 15 dialects. Expelled from Oxford in 1842, he became an officer in the Bombay Native Infantry. Working in intelligence, he was asked to investigate homosexual brothels in Karachi; his explicit study resulted in their closure and also killed his army career. Now intent on exploration, in 1855 Burton planned an expedition with three others, including John Speke, to discover the source of the Nile. They intended to push across Somaliland, but were attacked and were forced to return to England. The two returned to Africa in 1857-58, travelling inland from Zanzibar. It was a difficult trip; when they arrived at Lake Tanganyika, Speke was almost blind and Burton could hardly walk. Speke pushed on alone and discovered Lake Victoria, which he was convinced was the true source of the Nile. Burton disagreed with him, the two became badly estranged and, in September 1864, a debate between the two ended in tragedy when Speke was killed while hunting.

I was from England, and I lived from 1821-1890. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? Richard Francis Burton was born near Elstree, Hertfordshire, on March 19, 1821, the son of an army colonel. As a boy he accompanied his parents on their frequent travels about the European continent.
Burton later attended Oxford University, where he was known as "Ruffian Dick" for his long moustaches and penchant for challenging students to duels; he was eventually expelled for attending horse races. He was overjoyed at leaving Oxford; he found the dons and fellow students notably dull, and exited with a flair: he drove his horses and carriage over the flower beds while blowing a trumpet.
At 21 Burton joined the army of the East India Company and was posted to the Sindh, where he lived with the Muslims and learned several Eastern languages and dialects, including Iranian, Hindustani, and Arabic. (He mastered Arabic and Hindi and, during his eight-year stay, became proficient also in Marathi, Sindhi, Punjabi, Telugu, Pashto, and Multani. In his travels in Asia, Africa, and South America, he learned 25 languages, with dialects that brought the number to 40.

JUMP TO BOOKS There are numerous sites on the Web devoted to Burton, as well as many easily accessible books detailing his life and accomplishments there's no point in repeating such things here, beyond a few facts to jar the reader's memory he was captain in the Bombay Army; co-discoverer of the source of the White Nile with John Hanning Speke; British consul on the island of Fernando Po off the coast of Equatorial Guinea; at Damascus, Syria; at Trieste, Austria-Hungary and at Santos, Brazil. He was one of the most important linguists of his day, giving a well-received direct-from-Arabic English translation of the Arabian Nights in 16 volumes; original translator of the Kama Sutra ; expert swordsman; knighthood (1886) and a hundred other accomplishments, truly a 19th-Century Western Man in the best sense of the term. But then the 20th-Century came along, with its Stalinist "PC" cleansing of old works of history, which attempted to obliterate what I present here. There's another side, the suppressed, expurgated and censored side, that needs to be brought into the light. The following essays or chapters have been suppressed for various reasons Victorian prudishness and political reasons predominantly.

Richard Francis Burton
Richard Francis Burton was born near Elstree, Hertfordshire, on March 19, 1821.
He traveled Europe widely in his youth with his parents. At age ten, Burton stole his father's rifle and shot out stained-glass church windows. This wild behavior was to be the norm for the rest of his life. With his brother, he frequented the taverns, gambling dens, gypsy camps and brothels of France and Italy.
Burton attended Oxford University, where he became known as "Ruffian Dick" for his long moustaches and love of challenging other students to duels. He was eventually expelled for attending horse races, and marked the occasion by driving a horse and carriage over the school’s flowerbeds while blowing a trumpet.
At 21 Burton joined the army and was posted to the Sindh in India . He lived with the Muslims and learned several Eastern languages, including Iranian, Hindustani, and Arabic. In his travels, he learned 25 languages, with dialects that brought the number to 40.
While in the army, Burton used his language skills to work undercover and gain intelligence for his commander, Sir Charles Napier. At age 29, he fell ill with cholera and returned to England.

The Kama Sutra , is the earliest surviving example of a written Hindu love-manual. It was compiled by the Indian sage Vatsyayana sometime between the second and fourth centuries A.C.E. His work was based on earlier Kama Shastras or "Rules of Love" going back to at least the seventh century B.C.E., and is a compendium of the social norms and love-customs of patriarchal Northern India around the time he lived.
Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra is valuable today for his psychological insights into the interactions and scenarios of love, and for his structured approach to the many diverse situations he describes. He defines different types of men and women, matching what he terms "equal" unions, and gives detailed descriptions of many love-postures.
The Kama Sutra was written for the wealthy male city-dweller. It is not, and was never intended to be, a lover's guide for the masses, nor is it a "Tantric love-manual." About three hundred years after the

Notes on our translation, from Amazon.com
In 1984 the latest key event in the story of the Nights occurred with the appearance of an edition by Muhsin Mahdi, former professor of Arabic at Chicago and Harvard. He began work in 1959, and painstakingly compared a family of Syrian manuscripts, including that used by Galland, in order to reconstruct the common ancestor of all the Syrian manuscripts. He then did the same with the Egyptian manuscripts. Then by comparing the two reconstructed versions, he reconstructed a common ancestor, or 'archetype'. Mahdi speculated that this archetype was itself copied from a mother source in Syria in the thirteenth or early fourteenth century, and that this was based on an earlier version of the Nights from Iraq. His edition was published in Arabic as
