The lesson which life repeats and constantly enforces is 'look under foot.' You are always nearer the divine and the true sources of your power than you think.

The very idea of a bird is a symbol and a suggestion to the poet. A bird seems to be at the top of the scale, so vehement and intense his life. . . . The beautiful vagabonds, endowed with every grace, masters of all climes, and knowing no bounds how many human aspirations are realised in their free, holiday-lives and how many suggestions to the poet in their flight and song!

Biography
Burroughs was born on his family's farm in the Catskill Mountains , near Roxbury, New York , the seventh of ten children to Chauncy and Amy Kelly Burroughs. As a child he would spend many hours on the slopes of Old Clump Mountain , looking off to the east and the higher peaks of the Catskills , especially Slide Mountain , which he would later write about. His classmates at a local school included Jay Gould He left school at the age of 17 to become a teacher himself, while he continued his studies at a number of institutions including Cooperstown Seminary, where he first read the works of William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson , both of whom would become lifelong influences through their focus on nature and its effect on the spirit. Three years later he married Ursula North, while continuing his teaching career with an eye toward becoming a published author, which along with her more prudish attitude to sexuality strained his relations with her. The couple struggled financially and were not able to set up their own household until The next year he finally broke through as a writer, when the

... Writings by Him John Burroughs was born on the family farm in Roxbury, New York on April 3, 1837 and died on a train while returning from California on March 29, 1921. He was buried on the farm on his eighty-fourth birthday, April 3, 1921, at the foot of Boyhood rock on which he had played as a child. In his time he was an immensely popular nature writer. His popularity resided in the fact that readers appreciated the way of life he wrote about and came to exemplify - the tantalizingly elusive yet universally accessible - simple values, simple means, simple ends. By the time he was 20 years old Burroughs had moved from one pole to the other as far as his feelings about writing were concerned. From an early schoolboy aversion to any thought of writing, he had become determined to be an author. In an 1857 letter to his bride of one week he wrote, "I sometimes think I will not make the kind of husband that will always suit you. If I live, I shall be an author. My life will be one of study. It may be a weakness in me to cherish the thoughts I do, but I can't help it." Approximately 10 years after this letter to Ursula, Burroughs issued his first book

Edward Kanze Wins the "Oscar" of Nature Writing Awards
by Laura Kammermeier While Bird Watcher's Digest enjoys publishing first-time authors and photographers, the backbone of our best-selling magazine is the contributions of acclaimed artists, writers, and photographers. Their collective wit, intellect, and creative eye have made BWD what it is today. We are always pleased when our contributers win national recognition for their talents. Another success story, which follows close on the heels of BWD cover artist Michael DiGiorgio, is that of nature writer Edward Kanze. Ed Kanze lives with his wife, Debbie, and son, Ned, on 18 acres along the Saranac River in the Adirondacks. Edward Kanze, who is a regular contributing author to BWD's gardening column, was just named the winner of the 2005 Burroughs Award for the best nature essay. In 1922, The John Burroughs Association , created The Burroughs Awards, which have since become known as the "Oscars" of nature writing. Each year, they honor the best nature book, nature essay, and children's nature books published in America. Previous winners of the John Burroughs award include Roger Tory Peterson, Rachel Carson, Peter Matthiessen, and John McPhee. Ed Kanze's award-winning essay was first published in Adirondack Life magazine.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see. The longer I live the more my mind dwells upon the beauty and the wonder of the world. Thought If we take science as our sole guide, if we accept and hold fast that alone which is verifiable, the old theology must go. Science One can only learn his powers of action by action, and his powers of thought by thinking. Doing To treat your facts with imagination is one thing, but to imagine your facts is another. Facts Travel and society polish one, but a rolling stone gathers no moss, and a little moss is a good thing on a man. Travel That which distinguishes this day from all others is that then both orators and artillerymen shoot blank cartridges.
