    John Burroughs
    America's Most Beloved
    Nature Writer
    Abstract:
This hypertext is an introduction to the writings and life of John Burroughs (1837-1921) , one of the most popular nature writers of his time, who is now being "rediscovered" for his ecological foresight and sensitivity to nature at one's doorstep. The site is large, multi-faceted, and gives visitors a peacefully quiet and stress-relieving visit with an American writer who rewards our attention every bit as much today as he did when he was alive. The web author hopes that the section entitled "Contemporary Nature Writers" will encourage modern-day essayists on ecological themes to contribute their writings to this on-going project.
    Author's Bio:
Walt Carroll says he's not sure whether to describe himself as a businessman-educator or an educator-businessman. He established his company, Olympic Media Information (A Clearinghouse for Educational Films and Videos) in 1967. In 1996, he is about to publish his widely used databases, the "Educational Media Locator" and the "Healthcare Media Locator" in interactive versions. He has done teacher training at the State University of New York and taught desktop publishing at Ulster County (NY) Community College. His current academic affiliation is with the (online) Globewide Network Academy, where he distance-teaches the course he developed while at America Online, "Quick, Concise, Correct Writing," along with a new workshop, "HTML: An Introduction for Writers."

    VI. SCHOLARS AND ESSAYISTS
    Literary Critics.
In the field of literary criticism the work of Edwin Percy Whipple (1819-1886) was notable. He was the author of several volumes of scholarly essays including Literature and Life Literature of the Age of Elizabeth (1869), and American Literature, and Other Papers (1887). Horace E. Scudder (1838- 1902), long associated with the publication of the Atlantic Monthly , he succeeded Aldrich as its editor in 1890, was an indefatigable writer, the extent of whose service to American letters is hardly understood, since much of his work was anonymous. Henry N. Hudson Richard Grant White William James Rolfe (1827-1910), and Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) are to be remembered for their services in the criticism and interpretation of Shakespeare's dramas. Their scholarly editions of the plays are among the best that have been produced. The name of William Winter (1836-1917), author of Shakespeare's England (1886) and our foremost critic of the stage, may be mentioned in this connection. Personal Literary Recollections appeared in 1909.

The early environmental movement evolved in the midst of rapid change in American life after the Civil War. Two important figures of the movement came from New York state. They both loved the outdoors, watching birds and wrote of the things they loved. John Burroughs of West Park in Ulster County, with his prose and poetry, won the hearts and minds of a nation headlong into an industrial revolution.

    • Literary naturalist and essayist from the Catskills of New York. John Burroughs was one of America's foremost nature writers. He was a biographer of Walt Whitman and is famous for his love of birds. Burroughs accompanied Muir on the Alaska Harriman Expedition and other trips, including visits to Grand Canyon and Yosemite. He chronicled the discovery of Yosemite by the Mariposa Battalion in 1851. Burroughs wrote of Muir after their second meeting: "He is a poet and almost a Seer. Something ancient and far-away in the look of his eyes. He could not sit down in the corner of the landscape, as Thoreau did, he must have a continent for his playground..... Probably the truest lover of Nature.... we have yet had... [But here is] a little prolix... Ask him to tell you his famous dog story and you will get the whole theory of glaciation thrown in."
After Muir's death, Burroughs made this comment:

Tracing C.D. Shanly's "The Walker of the Snow"
by Lisa Chalykoff Over the last few months I have been researching the poem that inspired The Phantom Hunter (1888) by Canadian painter William Blair Bruce (1859-1906). Although it was clear to me from the outset that Bruce's painting was inspired by a poem called "The Walker of the Snow" by Charles Dawson Shanly (1811-1875), my efforts to confirm where and how Bruce came across Shanly's poem were complicated by a surprising number of editorial and bibliographic errors. Resolving these errors has uncovered information that will be of particular interest to scholars of nineteenth century Canadian painting and poetry. The process of resolution itself should, however, speak to a wider audience of scholars about the dangers that accrue from placing too much faith in the editorial accuracy of published documents. Not only has the research trail I recreate below taught me that publication is no guarantee of editorial accuracy; it has also demonstrated to me that the legitimacy we invest in published documents encourages the multiplication of errors that, with the passing of time and the expansion of our text-bound universe, can easily harden into seeming 'facts'.

John Burroughs (18371921). From his log cabin home in West Park, New York,Burrough s wrote essays about his deep love and respect for nature.
    http://hhr.highlands.com/litlinks.html
Literature of the Hudson River Valley
"Whoever has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill Mountains. They are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country. Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed, every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains, and they are regarded by all the good wives, far and near, as perfect barometers. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory."
    Washington Irving, Rip Van Winkle
    Washington Irving (1783-1859)
Irving was America's first internationally famous author. His work is so inextricably a part of the early Dutch towns of the Hudson River Valley that it is difficult to think of one without the other. In fact pieces he wrote which are set in other places are relatively unknown. The stories set in "these fairy mountains" are known for their subtle wit and memorable characters such as Ichabod Crane and Rip Van Winkle. He was born in New York City in 1783 and set out to study law although he had no love for it. He began to contribute essays to New York newspapers in 1802 and soon began earning a reputation as an amusing satirical writer on New York society. Together with his brothers Peter and William Irving, and William's brother-in-law James Paulding, they published
