July 10, 2003 marked the 100th anniversary of the "Red Letter" day when President Theodore Roosevelt and his wife Edith visited the famed literary naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921) at the Hudson River hamlet of West Park, township of Esopus, Ulster County, NY. In the course of several hours, TR and Edith stopped at Burroughs's two homes in that tiny village: his rustic cabin retreat "Slabsides" and his main-house at the farm Burroughs called "Riverby," overlooking the Hudson. The following description of the Roosevelts' visit comes from the book JOHN BURROUGHS: AN AMERICAN NATURALIST, written by Edward J. Renehan Jr. and published by Black Dome Press. Note: Julian Burroughs (1878-1954), referenced below, was the son of John Burroughs. The Reverend William J. Long - also mentioned below - was the writer whom both TR and Burroughs had recently attacked as a "nature-faker." Burroughs and TR had been friends since the 1880s. Burroughs had accompanied the President on a highly-publicized camping trip to Yellowstone in 1903 - a journey Burroughs eventually recorded in the book CAMPING AND TRAMPING WITH ROOSEVELT (Houghton Mifflin, 1907).

No matter: It's restful recreation for dreamers and thinkers alike! The bits and pieces found here do little more than touch lightly upon what each of the authors had to say about Burroughs. There is nothing complete. There is only a little of this and that, just enough, perhaps, to turn one to the books on the shelves and to the pages within where the extended thoughts are to be found. HOME SOURCES VOLUME CONTENTS ... CHRONOLOGY The Burroughs farm in Roxbury, NY was 320 acres in size. Sharp BLJB 9 Dallas Lore Sharp asks an innocent question in a way that should catch the eyes of any chronologist. "If the modern doctrine of few children (at most two) had been the religion of family life then, as it seems to be now (1927-'28), and Chauncey and Amy Burroughs had stopped with Hiram and Eden and Curtis and Wilson and Jane and Olly Ann, - then where would have been Wake-Robin and Signs and Seasons and Locusts and Wild Honey and Winter Sunshine and those other twenty volumes more?" It seems Sharp had an answer something like "Yeah, those books would never have been," but in the chronologist's mind, he would have answered his own question incorrectly. He should have known better, and he did know better. He makes it clear three pages later. But then, why should the chronologist be so picky?

John Burroughs was sixty-two years old and a self-proclaimed "home body" when Edward Harriman asked him to join the Alaska Expedition in 1899. Burroughs was not a traveler, nor was he a scientist. As a young man he'd tried his hand at many things: at botany, medicine, school teaching and office work at the Treasury in Washington, D.C. It was in Washington that he'd come under the influence of Walt Whitman. The poet urged Burroughs to leave his office job and write full time. Burroughs moved to the Catskill Mountains in New York State, and maintained a successful writing career for decades. He had published hundreds of articles on birds, flowers, and natural wonders of all sorts - his 27 books had sold over two million copies. He was the most famous nature writer of the day. His fame made him a natural choice for the Harriman trip. As he himself said, he "was not a man of science," but could "graze eagerly in every one of its fields - astronomy, geology, botany, zoology, physics, chemistry, natural history."

Name: John Burroughs Birth Date: April 3, 1837 Death Date: March 29, 1921 Place of Birth: Roxbury, New York, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: naturalist, essayist, writer John Burroughs Main Biography The American naturalist and essayist John Burroughs (1837-1921) wrote prolifically of his experiences in nature and was one of America's most honored writers at the beginning of the 20th century. The seventh of 10 children of Chauncy and Amy Kelly Burroughs, John Burroughs was born on the family dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains near Roxbury, N.Y., on April 3, 1837. He left school at 17 to become a teacher, and he alternated periods of teaching with brief studies at such institutions as Cooperstown Seminary, where he developed enthusiasm for the work of William Wordsworth and Ralph Waldo Emerson. At 20, he married Ursula North, but 2 years passed before his teaching yielded enough money for the couple to set up housekeeping. He was only 23 when James Russell Lowell accepted his essay "Expression" for the Atlantic Monthly . The essay sounded so much like Emerson's work that Lowell at first suspected it had been plagiarized.

Quotations "Science is a capital or fund perpetually reinvested; it accumulates, rolls up, is carried forward by every new man. Every man of science has all the science before him to go upon, to set himself up in business with. What an enormous sum Darwin availed himself of and reinvested! Not so in literature; to every poet, to every artist, it is still the first day of creation, so far as the essentials of his task are concerned. Literature is not so much a fund to be reinvested as it is a crop to be ever new-grown."
