Burroughs , William S. Last Words: The Final Journals of William S. Burroughs , New York Grove Press 2000 Culled from journal entries of the last nine months of his life, this book spans William S. Burroughs ' realms of cultural criticism, personal memoir, and fiction. Classic Burroughs concerns rants on U.S. drug policy, contempt of the state of the human race, and his love for his cats permeate the book. He breaks into old "routines" and provides frequent commentary on whatever he is reading, from high literature to low-brow thrillers. The "Old Man" emerges as frequently comical, sometimes meditative, and always engaged and he is more open and vulnerable than in his other works. His reflections on the deaths of his friends Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary provide a window on the preparations Burroughs was making for his own death a quest for absolution marked by guilt and loss. "Now that

Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read. .
Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 1, 1875. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy. He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). After his military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898) In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934).

Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in 1875, into a wealthy Chicago family, although he later claimed to have spent his childhood in Peking. During his early years, he attended several private schools and served in the military, where he first heard stories of battles with American Indians. He married Emma Hulbert in 1900, and spent the next decade in near-poverty, attempting various careers without success. The turning point for Burroughs came in 1910, when he began writing for pulp magazines. A story called Under the Moons of Mars , which introduced the hero John Carter, was his first professional sale, published in 1912. All of Carter’s adventures were published in book form in 1917 as A Princess of Mars - the series eventually swelled to eleven titles. Burroughs’s other popular series included the Carson of Venus books Pellucidar , and The Land that Time Forgot However, his most stunning success was the Tarzan series, beginning with Tarzan of the Apes in 1912. Burroughs eventually wrote 24 more Tarzan adventures, which were adapted into many films. In order to cover his financial losses, he wrote an average of three novels a year.

The Chicago and Oak Park Years
Captain George Tyler Burroughs of the Union Army married Mary Evaline Zieger on February 23, 1863. After the war, George and Mary Evaline move to Chicago in Fall, 1868, where George is successful in the distillery business and becomes very involved in political, civic, and social affairs. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born to the couple on February 23, 1875. He is the youngest of four boys George Tyler Jr., Henry (Harry) Studley and Frank Coleman and grew up in a three-story brick house on Chicago's West Side, at 650 (later 646) Washington Boulvevard between Lincoln and Robey Streets. In his late teens, Edgar spent part of the year working on his brother's cattle ranch (the Bar Y) along the lower Raft River in Cassia County, southeastern Idaho. Edgar's high school experiences included a period of study at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and later the Michigan Military Academy at Orchard Lake. His time at the Michigan Academy included many adventures - quarterback of the Prep School Team of the West, 1894; escape from barracks (desertion!) in 1893; he had his own "fiery cavalry horse", "Captain", on whom he won second prize in exhibition drills. In 1893, Edgar drove the first automobile in Chicago, thanks to his father's new occupation as owner of the American Battery Company.

E dgar R ice B urroughs (1875 - 1950) Web Buriedantiques.com In 1962 a Los Angeles librarian tried to banish the Tarzan books from the shelves, claiming, because Tarzan and Jane weren't married, that the books were immoral. Actually, Tarzan and Jane were married at the end of 'The Return of Tarzan.' The woman must have got her information from movies she had seen, which often gave the impression that he and Jane were not married. Married or not, it is certainly not a reason to suppress any work of literature! Many die-hard fans rose to Tarzan's defense (citing chapter and verse), newspaper editorials were written, and a few publishers began to wonder if there was something still worthwhile about Tarzan.
This is now a part of the 'Tarzan' lore. The character 'Tarzan' is today still one of the most popular and recognizable heroes ever to grace the pages of a book or run through the imagination of an innocent child.

Son premier livre, Under the Moons of Mars , paraît dans All Story en 1912.
