Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs, literature in the period between 1890 and 1930 is marked by the urge to escape from urban culture. H. G. Wells Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) spanned the great gulf between the mid Victorian period when he was born (in the year dynamite was invented) and the atomic age which he predicted and lived to see. He wrote what he called " scientific romances ." Wells can be said to have invented most categories of science fiction:
  • time travel The Time Machine interplanetary travel The First Men in the Moon alien invasion The War of the Worlds future war The World Set Free sinister biological experiments The Island of Dr. Moreau

Burroughs's first sale (in 1912) was A Princess of Mars , opening the floodgates to one of the must successfuland prolificliterary careers in history. This is a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure. A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough. Although this novel can stand alone, there are a total of 11 volumes in this classic series of otherworldly, swashbuckling adventure. Reviews. Burroughs, Edgar Rice

American author born in Chicago, Illinois. Firmly rooted in pulp fiction, he specialized in proto-science fictional planetary romances and lost race yarns. Other than the Tarzan books, his Martian novels are his best-known works.
  • Tarzan of the Apes
Archetypical story of a man raised by animals, and his efforts to reclaim his heritage. The book ends with him halfway there, and is best read in conjunction with Jungle Tales of Tarzan , which explores his youth in more detail, and The Return of Tarzan , which brings the first book to a satisfactory resolution. Burroughs' Tarzan is both better and worse than the myriad movie versions; he has a power and dignity they generally lack, but his Africa abounds with fictional species and improbable settings, and if you read very far into the series the adventures grow more and more formulaic. Followed by sequels, The Return of Tarzan The Beasts of Tarzan The Son of Tarzan Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar Jungle Tales of Tarzan Tarzan the Untamed Tarzan the Terrible Tarzan and the Golden Lion Tarzan and the Ant Men Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle

"As the body rolled to the ground Tarzan of the Apes placed his foot upon the neck of his lifelong enemy, and raising his eyes to the full moon threw back his fierce young head and voiced the wild and terrible cry of his people."

(from Tarzan of the Apes, 1914 ) American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan. Although critics have considered Burroughs's fiction crudely written, his books are still widely read and usually superior to the films. They also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors from Tarzan novels are portrayed as members of an admirable tribe, and his cave girls Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princess of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. He attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry (1896-97) and the Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). After his military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), and associated with the American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter.

Meet Tarzan's maker
Edgar Rice Burroughs' life evenhandedly told
By BARBARA LISS TARZAN FOREVER: The Life of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Creator of Tarzan. By John Taliaferro. Scribner, $30. RAY Bradbury once asked, "What if Edgar Rice Burroughs had never been born, and Tarzan with him?" For Bradbury, who spent his boyhood quoting Lord Greystroke, growling like Numa and swinging through the trees like Tarzan himself, the question was unthinkable. Unthinkable, too, the idea that John Carter might never have traveled magically to Mars to do battle with green-skinned thugs. Without Burroughs, argued Bradbury (whose own vision of Mars appeared in The Martian Chronicles the year Burroughs died), generations of boys and girls would never have learned how to meet the challenges of the universe. Recounting the life and work of a writer as prolific as Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) may be one of those challenges. In some years Burroughs wrote as many as 400,000 words, five books' worth. He also filled countless boxes with diaries, letters, contract agreements, articles and unpublished manuscripts, including his autobiography. A conscientious biographer could get lost in the details of such a well-documented life, even before getting to the man's books. And what a shelf of books it is. Although Burroughs was already 37 when
