PROGRESS MADE VISIBLE
INSPIRED BY THE WORLD'S FAIRS
World's Fairs have been used as settings or themes for numerous works of fiction, film, and music. The Fair may be merely a colorful background for a romance or adventure or it may be a key element in the plot. Visiting a World's Fair may motivate a writer to develop his or her own utopian city. For example, the Emerald City of Oz was inspired by Baum's visit to the "White City" at the Columbian Exposition. The books shown here are merely a selection; others range from The Education of Henry Adams to the Elvis Presley film It Happened at the World's Fair. Frances Hodgson Burnett, 1849-1924.
Two Little Pilgrims' Progress: A Story of the City Beautiful. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1895. L. Frank (Lyman Frank) Baum, 1856-1919.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz . Chicago: G. M. Hill Co., 1900. Raphael Fassett.
Up and Down the Pike: March Two-step. Chicago: F.R. Root, 1904. Meet Me in St Louis : Turner Entertainment; Santa Monica, CA: MGM/UA Home Video, c1994.

She neither shrieks nor faints. She shoves him into a concealed spot in the parlor until night, then hauls him to the distant reaches of the ancient house's cellars and arranges to have the drafty, smelly old tunnels walled off while she is on her honeymoon. She lives happily ever after, married to the man of her choice, and does many good works for the people the villian had wronged. Her adoring husband doesn't seem to know, and the one person who knows, her equally adoring sister, reveals the secret to Clorinda on her deathbed. Crime (or self-defense) pays. However, in the companion book with the story of the husband, (His Grace of Ormonde) it is revealed that the husband knew about the murder all alon

    INTRODUCTION
to top This Bibliography was born out of the belief of the Friends of Casco Bay and the Casco Bay Estuary Project that one of the most effective ways to en courage public stewardship of Casco Bay is by increasing the public's knowledge of all aspects of the Bay. We see it as a tool to help people who are interested in the Bay to learn more about it. It is intended to be a point of entry rather than an exhaustive compilation - many old and technical references have been omitted. Our hope is that the Bibliography for Casco Bay will be used by the in formed general reader who wishes to increase his or her awareness of the chara cteristics of Casco Bay and the issues facing it and is willing to deal with material of some technical difficulty.
