Burnett's life

The Secret Garden
Burnett's Life and Work Burnett's life follows the course of her most successful children's novels: she was born to comfort, reduced to (near-)poverty, then restored to wealth in adulthood. She was the middle of five children of a well-off family in Manchester, England. When she was four, her father died suddenly, reducing the family's circumstances considerably. Her mother maintained the family business for 10 years but the family moved increasingly into the ranks of the shabby genteel. With the support of an American uncle, the family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1865; however, the new start does not appear to have reversed the family fortunes.
Like Alcott , Burnett felt responsible for relieving her family’s financial condition and tried teaching and raising geese before selling two stories for $35 to Godey’s Lady’s Book in 1868, at age 19 (Bixler). She was soon selling regularly to various magazines, and became a successful novelist 10 years later. Her current reputation rests almost completely on three children's books: Little Lord Fauntleroy A Little Princess (1905 though she wrote two earlier versions, the novel

Little Lord Fauntleroy: Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924)
Nationality
It is interesting to speculate if Mrs. Benett was an American or English author. One of the purposes of this website is to try to see what social trends in different countries can be found by assessing clothing styles. Mrs. Benett is difficult to categorize as she was born in England but lived in America. She clearly wrote for an international audience; she crossed the Atlantic numerous times after immigrating to Tennessee as a child. She seems to have remained very British at heart. Little Lord Fauntleroy , of course, was based on her all American son, Vivian . Even so, her book and resulting teatrical production was an enormous success in England suggesting the story appealed to both American and English sensibilities.
Some observers appear to categorize her as a clearly American author writing for an American audience. One observer opines, "I think her sentimentilizing of the `poor little rich boy' is more graphic in her Little Lord Fauntleroy . My question is, was she lamorizing the working class/farm boy Dickons and ridiuculing the infantile "lording" of Colin partly because she was an American?" (Collin was the sickly boy in her other well know book

    The Secret Garden
    Author Info: Frances Hodgson Burnett
When Mary Lennox's parents die in India, she is shipped back to England to live on her uncle's estate, Misselthwaite Manor, in Yorkshire. The place is pretty much run by the dreadful Mrs. Medlock, while Mary's uncle travels compulsively. Lord Archibald Craven is trying to escape the memories that linger there, of his wife who died in childbirth. Mary is a sullen brat but she is largely ignored by Mrs. Medlock and so has time to explore the many nooks and crannies of the manor. She finds one room that looks just like her mother's didit is of course her aunt'sand there finds a large key. It turns out that the key fits the door of a secret garden, which Lady Craven tended and which is now kept locked and allowed to grow wild. Mary befriends young Dickon, whose sister is a housemaid, and together they explore the garden. One night Mary determines to find the source of a mysterious crying she's heard in the house, and when she eventually does she discovers her cousin, Colin, who survived his mother but is now sickly, crippled and confined to his room. He proves an even worse brat than she. Their mutual stubbornness though proves a boon as she refuses to accept Colin's self-pitying and rejects the idea that he's truly all that ill. She sets her mind to showing him the garden, convinced that just getting outside will do him good. Meanwhile, he threatens and commands the staff until they allow him out of the house. Their visits to the garden will in fact transform all of their lives in ways that will move even the most jaded reader. No wonder it is such a beloved classic.

A children's cookbook containing many English and a few Indian specialties was published in 1999, "inspired by The Secret Garden." At least six bed-and-breakfasts in the United States and Canada have "Secret Garden Rooms." The devotion inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 book should not be surprising: In 1886, her Little Lord Fauntleroy inspired mothers in England and America to grow their young sons' curls long and to dress their boys in velvet suits and lace collars. Burnett was born in England but emigrated to a rather hardscrabble life in Tennessee when she was 15. In her late teens, she eased her family's financial difficulties with her earnings from stories she sold to women's magazines. Even before she became famous for her books for and about children, Burnett was a popular novelist, with her first, That Lass o' Lowrie's, published in 1877. Her fame grew with the publication of Little Lord Fauntleroy Sara Crewe, later reissued and dramatized as A Little Princess. Her nearly 50 novels, plays, and collections of stories tended toward the sentimental, although they were notable for their faithful reproduction of family life and class distinctions.
