Irlandais, de père anglican, un notaire, et de mère catholique, Edmund Burke est un libéral ( La vie et l'oeuvre § 1), mais un libéral "à la britannique", un libéral violemment hostile à la Révolution française, révolution libérale en 1789 mais révolution socialiste en 1793, un libéral irlandais dont la philosophie politique reste attachée à un ordre divin providentiel fondé sur un droit naturel historique ( § 1 - La vie et l'oeuvre Né à Dublin en 1729, Edmund Burke est un homme politique, un whig - c'est-à-dire un libéral "à l'anglaise", qui ne dédaigne pas de philosopher : ainsi publie-t-il en 1757 une " Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of our Ideas of the Sublim and Beautiful " ; ou de s'intéresser à l'histoire du droit : " Essays towards a history of the laws of England Mais Burke est également un journaliste politique, c'est-à-dire un commentateur en même temps qu'un acteur politique, ce qui 1'amène à écrire, dans un style plutôt vif, dans le "feu de l'action", sur des sujets d'actualité : pour les colons d'Amérique contre la métropole, pour les catholiques irlandais (sa mère est catholique s'il est anglican), contre la Compagnie des Indes pour les droits des Hindous, contre la traite des Noirs et pour la défense des pauvres, sans oublier les homosexuels anglais qu'il souhaite voir traiter par le droit d'une manière moins répressive. En novembre 1790 il fait donc paraître à Londres un ouvrage éminemment d'actualité, ses fameuses "
