61. Edmund Burke; A Short Biography
Edmund Burke (17291797). Born in Dublin, Edmund Burke was educated at Trinity College there, and studied law at the Middle Temple in London.
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/burke.htm
A note from A Study Of Our Decline by Philip Atkinson Biographies Edmund Burke Born in Dublin, Edmund Burke was educated at Trinity College there, and studied law at the Middle Temple in London. He first became known for his Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757); in 1765, he became private secretary to the Prime Minister, the Marquess of Rockingham, and an M.P. The intellectual leader of the Rockingham Whigs, with whom he took office briefly in 1782 (he also served in the Fox-North Coalition Ministry of 1783), he became famous as a brilliant, intemperate, and tiresome orator in the House of Commons. There he vigorously supported conciliation with the American colonies (and not merely because he was Agent of the State of New York), economic and administrative reform, and Catholic emancipation. The last years of his life were spent on two great causes: the impeachment and trial of Warren Hastings, who was accused of oppression and the illegal acquisition of enormous wealth as Governor-General of India, and opposition to the French Revolution and the spread of its doctrines in England. Burke is remembered today as an intellectual who distrusted reason, and as a political theorist who condemned theory. Profoundly moved by concrete injustice, he opposed any attempt to alter existing institutions on the basis of abstract principles, or to apply a "delusive geometrical accuracy in moral arguments." The best forms of government, he felt, were based on tradition: they had evolved through, and were tested by, time. This belief is the basis for his analysis of party politics,"

'Burke is an extraordinary man. His stream of mind is perpetual.'
Samuel Johnson Burke was a statesman and writer, born and educated in Dublin. Reynolds met him soon after the publication of his Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful in 1757. The two were close friends for thirty-five years, Burke strongly influencing Reynolds's views on society and politics. In the 1780s Burke became the leader of the Whig group supporting Charles James Fox, and strongly opposed to the war against revolutionary America. He published the hugely influential Reflections on the Revolution in France in 1790, decrying the effects of the revolution.

    Biography
    B. was one of the greatest political thinkers whom England has produced, and all his writings, like his speeches, are characterised by the welding together of knowledge, thought, and feeling. Unlike most orators he is more successful as a writer than as a speaker. He rose too far above the heads of his audience, which the continued splendour of his declamation, his inordinate copiousness, and his excessive vehemence, often passing into fury, at length wearied, and even disgusted: but in his writings are found some of the grandest examples of a fervid and richly elaborated eloquence. Though he was never admitted to the Cabinet, he guided and influenced largely the policy of his party, while by his efforts in the direction of economy and order in administration at home, and on behalf of kindly and just government in India, as well as by his contributions to political philosophy, he laid his country and indeed the world under lasting obligations.

    2. What does he mean when he says that the British system follows "nature"?
    3. What did the French revolutionaries do wrong?
    4. What should they have done? Why?
    5. Why is "innovation" "selfish"? (See the second paragraph.)
    6. What does he mean by "extravagant and presumptuous speculations"?
    7. What are his views on "equality"? 8. Who should the leaders of society and government be? 9. Why does Burke argue against a government founded on "natural rights"? He claims to support "real" rights and liberty. What does he mean? 9. How would Burke have evaluated the arguments of Thomas Paine? [1] You will observe that from Magna Charta to the Declaration of Right it has been the uniform policy of our constitution to claim and assert our liberties as an entailed inheritance derived to us from our forefathers, and to be transmitted to our posterity- as an estate specially belonging to the people of this kingdom, without any reference whatever to any other more general or prior right. By this means our constitution preserves a unity in so great a diversity of its parts. We have an inheritable crown, an inheritable peerage, and a House of Commons and a people inheriting privileges, franchises, and liberties from a long line of ancestors.

    Biography:
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was a British statesman and philosopher whose contribution to the philosophy of aesthetics was to argue that our enjoyment of beauty is not based upon any measure of intellectual clarity. Instead, it is based upon our imaginations being engaged by the qualities of obscurity and suggestiveness. Burke is also well known for his book Reflections on the Revolution in France , which is an important statement of conservative political principles and ideas. In it he criticizes the principles behind the social contract theory and argues instead for greater respect for the rights and privileges contained in traditional value systems. The Philosophy of Politics and the Philosophy of Law are often studied separately, but they are presented here jointly because they both come back to the same thing: the study of force. Politics is the study of political force in the general community, while jurisprudence is the study of how laws can and should be used to achieve political and social goals.

    Edmund Burke
    Biography
British statesman, parliamentary orator and political thinker, played a prominent part in all major political issues for about 30 years after 1765, and remained an important figure in the history of political theory. Burke was Irish, born in Dublin in 1729. His father, a solicitor, was protestant, his mother Roman Catholic. He entered Trinity college, Dublin, in 1744, and came to London in 1750. Burke's A Vindication of Natural Society was published in 1756 and in 1757 A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful appeared. Also in 1757, Burke married Jane Nugent, the daughter of an Irish Catholic doctor. His political career started in 1765 when he became the private secretary of one of the Whig leaders in Parliament, the marquess of Rockingham. Burke soon proved to be one of the main characters in the constitutional controversy in Britain under George III, who at the time was trying to establish more actual power for the crown. Although the crown had lost some influence under the first two Georges, one of the major political problems in 18th century Britain was the fact that both the king and Parliament had considerable control over the executive. Burke responded to these affairs in his pamphlet Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents (1770), in which he argued that although George's actions were legal in the sense that they were not against the letter of the constitution, they were all the more against it in spirit. In the pamphlet Burke elaborates on his famous and new justification of a party, defined as :... a body of men united on public principle, which could act as a constitutional link between king and parliament, providing consistency and strenght in administration, or principled criticism in opposition" (...431-32).
