Born in the parish of Elstow, in Bedfordshire in November 1628, to Thomas Bunyan and Margaret Bentley (Thomas's first wife, Anne Pinney, had died the year before without any surviving children). Being born into a family with some afluence he was well educated throughout his childhood and adolesence.
In 1644 he enlisted in the Parliamentary army, joining with the Newport Pagnell garrison, at the regulation age of sixteen. In 1645 the garrison moved to Leicester. Most probably, it was here that one of Bunyan's comrades was shot. " When I was a soldier, I, with others, were drawn out to go to such a place to besiege it; but when I was just ready to go, one of the company desired to go in my room; to which, when I had consented, he took my place; and coming to the siege, as he stood sentinel, he was shot into the head with a musket bullet, and died.

Synopsis
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a Publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the Publican, standing afar off would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Luke, xviii. 10-13...

Name: John Bunyan Birth Date: November, 1628 Death Date: August 31, 1688 Place of Birth: Elstow, England Place of Death: England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: author, preacher John Bunyan Main Biography The English author and Baptist preacher John Bunyan (1628-1688) wrote "The Pilgrim's Progress" and some 60 other pious works. The sincere evangelical urgency of his religious thought and the vivid clarity of his prose have won wide admiration. John Bunyan, born in Elstow near Bedford, was baptized on Nov. 30, 1628. His father, the brazier-tinker "Thomas Bonnion," derived from an old Bedfordshire family which had declined in fortune and status. Bunyan had a rudimentary education and at an early age became a tinker. From 1644 to 1647 he served with the parliamentary army during the Puritan Revolution, but he saw little or no fighting. Religious Development About 1649 Bunyan married a pious Anglican who introduced him to Arthur Dent's The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven . Under their combined influence Bunyan became an attentive churchgoer and delighted in Anglican ceremonial and bell ringing. But he soon recognized that he was desperately bound by sin and that only Ch.....

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about John Bunyan
John Bunyan was born in 1628. In 1644 he was caught up in the Civil War and drafted into the Parliamentary army. Four years later he entered a period of intense spiritual struggle (chronicled in Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners), after which he emerged a new man. He joined a Nonconformist church and began to preach. Bunyan spent many years in prison because of his faith and during this time began writing The Pilgrim's Progress. The first part was published in 1678 and the second part, together with the whole work, was published in 1684. Bunyan died in 1688. Also, what is from men is uncertain, and is often lost and tumbled over by men; but what is from God is fixed as a nail in a sure place. There is nothing that so abides with us as what we receive from God; and the reason why the Christians in this day are at such a loss as to some things is that they are contented with what comes from men's mouths, without searching and kneeling before God to know of Him the truth of things. Things we receive at God's hands come to us as truths from the minting house, though old in themselves, yet new to us. Old truths are always new to us if they come with the smell of Heaven upon them.

An Introduction from Judith Bronte "I have been amazed to discover how many people believe that John Bunyan only wrote one book, that being 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. It is true that 'The Pilgrim's Progress' has been the most published book in the world, second only to the Bible, however, John Bunyan wrote much more. He had over sixty published works, much of which has been sadly forgotten or passed over. This web site features approximately forty of John Bunyan's writings. Among them are 'Grace Abounding', 'The Holy War', 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman', and of course, 'The Pilgrim's Progress', which features some old illustrations from the allegory. But, also be sure to check out Bunyan's lesser known works, such as, 'Christ a Complete Saviour', 'Ebal and Gerizzim', 'The Holy City', 'One Thing is Needful', which is a book of poetry, 'Saved By Grace', 'The Heavenly Footman', 'Seasonable Counsel', 'A Discourse of the House of the Forest of Lebanon', and many others. This web site is not an intellectual exploration of John Bunyan's life. My endeavor is to present him as he did himself... in his own words. Please feel free to take what you want from this web site. Republish it on the Internet, print out your favorites and pass them to friends, shout it from the rooftops, because John Bunyan's message holds as true as the day he wrote it.

As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a Den, and
I laid me down in that place to sleep: and, as I slept, I dreamed a dream. I dreamed, and behold, I
saw a man clothed with rags, standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book

therein; and, as he read, he wept, and trembled; and, not being able longer to contain, he brake out
with a lamentable cry, saying, "What shall I do?" In this plight, therefore, he went home and refrained himself as long as he could, that his wife and
children should not perceive his distress; but he could not be silent long, because that his trouble
increased. Wherefore at length he brake his mind to his wife and children; and thus he began to talk

    John Bunyan
John Bunyan was the son of a travelling tinker (a mender of pots and kettles) based in Bedford, and became one himself. Although tinkers were usually gipsies, the Bunyans were not. Bunyans could trace their ancestors in Bedford to the 12th century (although the family name went through thirty four spelling variations before settling on “Bunyan”). John never went to school, but he learnt to read and write at home. Bunyan’s mother died when he was sixteen and his father quickly remarried. This seems to have provoked him into leaving home and becoming a soldier. It was the late stages of the first part of the Civil War. It is not known which side he fought on. He recounted later that he had a miraculous escape from death when another soldier traded places with him on a guard duty and was shot. After the war, he went back to Bedford and to life as a tinker. He married in 1649. He and his wife were so poor they didn’t have so much as a dish or a spoon between them. But his wife brought two religious books from her father which kindled Bunyan’s religious interest. Up to that point apparently, Bunyan had been a fun-loving man. He liked dancing and bell-ringing and swore a great deal. The influence of his wife made him a reformed man. He went to church and read the Bible. In 1655 his wife died. He later wrote an account of his early married life (without once finding it necessary to mention his wife’s name in it).
