John Bunyan
Bunyan, John 1628-88), English writer and Puritan minister, author of The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most famous religious allegories in the English language. About 1648 he married Margaret Bentley, a member of one of the Puritan sects of the day; Bunyan experienced a religious conversion and joined her church. With her, Bunyan talked of religion, and read in two books which he names: "The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven", by Arthur Dent (first published in 1601), and "The Practice of Piety (1612). During the four years he went through a terrible spiritual struggle. In speaking of himself afterwards, he describes himself as the worst of sinners; but the only wickedness in which he is known to have indulged is "swearing, lying, and blaspheming", and from coarser vices he seems to have been free. The fury of his spiritual struggle, and the darkness of his own description of himself, both were due to the strength and depth of his own nature. While Bunyan was in prison his library consisted of the Bible and the Book of Martyrs by the theologian John Foxe. Studying the content and literary style of these works, Bunyan began to write religious tracts and pamphlets. Before his release he wrote the first of his major works, the spiritual autobiography Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666).

John Bunyan John Bunyan is perhaps the most popular religious writer in the English language. His best known work, The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into more languages than any book other than the Bible. Bunyan was born at Elstow, England, about a mile from Bedford, the son of a poor tinker (a maker of metal utensils). He probably acquired most of his knowledge of the English language from reading the Bible. As a young man, Bunyan served in the Army and fought in the English Civil War on the side of the Roundheads. He married in 1649, and among his new wife's possessions were copies of Dent's Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven and Bayly's Practice of Piety . Reading these had a profound influence on Bunyan's spiritual life. In 1653 he joined Pastor Gifford's Independent Church, in Bedford. Shortly thereafter he began to preach, and his preaching proved to be popular with his listeners, but not with the magistrate in Bedford who sentenced him to jail for "unauthorized preaching." Bunyan was set free, but he again jailed after he refused to stop preaching in public. His imprisonment was intermittent from 1660 to 1672, but he used the time to begin writing The Pilgrim's Progress and several other works, including some poetry. Bunyan's major works are

Grace Abounding Some Gospel Truths Opened ; it was followed in the same year by a second tract in the same sense, A Vindication of Gospel Truths. Bunyan was finally relieved from the internal sufferings which had embittered his life by sharp persecution from without. He had been five years a preacher when the Restoration put it in the power of the Cavalier gentlemen and clergymen all over the country to oppress the dissenters. In November 1660 he was flung into Bedford gaol; and there he remained, with some intervals of partial and precarious liberty, during twelve years. Book of Martyrs. His knowledge of the Bible was such that he might have been called a living concordance; and on the margin of his copy of the Book of Martyrs are still legible the ill-spelt lines of doggerel in which he expressed his reverence for the brave sufferers, and his implacable enmity to the mystical Babylon. Prison life gave him leisure to write, and during his first imprisonment he wrote, in addition to several tracts and some verse

After a brief period at the village free school, Bunyan learned the tinker's trade, which he followed intermittently throughout his life. Joining the parliamentary army in 1644, he served until 1647. The reading of several pious books and a constant study of the Bible intensified Bunyan's religious beliefs, and in 1653 he began acting as lay preacher for a congregation of Baptists in Bedford. In this capacity he came into conflict with the Quakers led by George Fox and turned to writing in defense of his beliefs. In 1660 agents of the restored monarchy arrested him for unlicensed preaching, and he remained in prison for the next 12 years. During this period Bunyan wrote nine books, the most famous of which is Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners (1666), a fervent spiritual autobiography. Soon after his release in 1672 he was reimprisoned briefly and wrote the first part of his masterpiece
