    John Bunyan, (1628 - 1688)
    Obstinate Preacher
Older folk must have shaken their heads in wonder. "John Bunyan of all people! Why, we remember when he was a filthy mouthed ringleader in every sort of mischief."
Bunyan was born in 1628 in the heart of England, a mile south of Bedford a few years before the English Civil War. His family was so poor that when his father died, John was left only one shilling and his tinker's anvil. The boy had little formal education. However, he learned to read and feasted on medieval romances in which valiant knights underwent great trials and conquered villains and monsters. In youth he boasted a mouth so profane it shocked even wicked men. Additionally, he loved to dance, bell-ring and lead Sunday sports, all considered improper by Puritans. Although he attended church, he had little religious feeling.
    Spared for Something
John turned sixteen in 1644 at the height of the Civil War. He joined the army. Since Bedford was a Parliamentarian stronghold, it is probable he served Cromwell. While on duty he was "drawn out" to take part in a siege. Another soldier asked to take his place. "As he stood sentinel he was shot in the head with a musket bullet and died." John came to see this as proof God had spared his life for a great work.

An Introduction from Judith Bronte "I have been amazed to discover how many people believe that John Bunyan only wrote one book, that being 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. It is true that 'The Pilgrim's Progress' has been the most published book in the world, second only to the Bible, however, John Bunyan wrote much more. He had over sixty published works, much of which has been sadly forgotten or passed over. This web site features approximately forty of John Bunyan's writings. Among them are 'Grace Abounding', 'The Holy War', 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman', and of course, 'The Pilgrim's Progress', which features some old illustrations from the allegory. But, also be sure to check out Bunyan's lesser known works, such as, 'Christ a Complete Saviour', 'Ebal and Gerizzim', 'The Holy City', 'One Thing is Needful', which is a book of poetry, 'Saved By Grace', 'The Heavenly Footman', 'Seasonable Counsel', 'A Discourse of the House of the Forest of Lebanon', and many others. This web site is not an intellectual exploration of John Bunyan's life. My endeavor is to present him as he did himself... in his own words. Please feel free to take what you want from this web site. Republish it on the Internet, print out your favorites and pass them to friends, shout it from the rooftops, because John Bunyan's message holds as true as the day he wrote it.

John Bunyan John Bunyan was born the son of a tinker, in Elstow, south of Bedford. He lived in the village until he was sixteen, learning his father's trade. The outbreak of Civil War in 1642 led to a brief spell serving with parliamentary forces at Newport Pagnell, from which he returned to Elstow and married. The arrival of his first child Mary, who was born blind, triggered a spiritual crisis in Bunyan who may have blamed his sinful life for his daughter's blindness. In 1653 he sought out the congregation of St John's Church and became friends with John Gifford the pastor. By 1656 Bunyan was preaching himself and had written his first book Some Gospel Truths Opened . In 1660 Oliver Cromwell's protectorate came to an end and the state forbade preaching. Bunyan was interrupted as he began to preach in Samsell and was arrested. He received a three month sentence. By refusing to stop preaching, Bunyan extended his sentence to twelve years, a period in which he wrote the famous Pilgrim's Progress . In 1672 Charles II issued the Declaration of Religious Indulgence and religious dissenters were freed from prisons. A year later the Declaration was withdrawn and Bunyan returned to prison. He continued to write and on his final release was able to preach in a barn on the site of the current Bunyan Meeting House. Bunyan died in 1688.
