John Buchan (1875-1940) But Buchan's health problems didn't deter him from enjoying the outdoor life throughout his career he enthusiastic participated in mountain climbing, stalking and fishing. He was also intensely interested in exploration of the remaining unknown areas of the world and wrote about all of these in both his fictional and nonfictional works. His love of the outdoors was fostered as a result of spending his youthful summer holidays in upper Tweedsdale area where his matemal grandparents lived. The title he choose when he was made a peer before going to Canada was clearly a result of his identification with this area. AIthough he complained about the time wasted in 'going out', he didn't neglect the social side of things and, in particular, he enjoyed the clubs of London, country-house weekends and Highland hunting lodges, all of which feature in his writings. At age thirty-two he married Susan Grosvenor whose father Norman was rich and well connected. Their marriage was an especially happy one and they raised three sons and a daughter. After WW I, they bought Elsfield Manor, an estate outside Oxford in the Cotswold country and this became the source of another enthusiasm and the need for more writing to pay for it.

    John Buchan
John Buchan, first Baron Tweedsmuir of Elsfield, statesman, author and publisher, initially earned the respect of generals Louis Botha and Jan Smuts when, as a member of Milner's Kindergarten, he was responsible for the resettlement of the Boers after the Peace of Vereeniging. During the First World War, he served on the Headquarters Staff of the British Army in France and later as Director of Intelligence. He represented the Scottish Universities in Parliament before being raised to the peerage and posted to Canada as governor general in 1935. John Buchan was a most prolific writer with more than fifty titles to his name. These included adventure stories, several biographies, articles and reviews for magazines and newspapers, and an autobiography, Memory-hold-the-door, which appeared in 1940. However, Buchan's multifarious writings brought him under attack. Lloyd George, the British prime minister, recorded in his memoirs: These comments (which, in Liddell Hart's view, were `needlessly sharp') cannot be applied to the History of the South African Forces in France. In this case, Buchan went to great lengths to consult the primary sources. Most of the records generated by the South African Brigade were still in France; and to these Buchan had full access. Many of these archival sources have not been used by subsequent historians, with the result that Buchan's work remains the best documented study on this topic. This has perhaps inevitably targeted his work, causing many modern historians to quote freely and even dishonestly from it. Despite even recent attempts, Buchan's contribution remains the standard reference work on the South African brigade on the Western Front. It is well-researched and equally well-written; and after seventy-five years it is still unsupplanted.

Figure 1.. John Buchan is another popular Scottish author who has has had his worked turned in to both movie and television productions. Buchan gives us some rather gritty views of childhood in Scotland. His spy novel Hunting Towers (1922) described how working-class boys dressed in Glasgow, a very run-down city after World War I. He also explains that Boy Scouting while popular was a primarily middle class organization. Many working-class boys could not afford to purchase a uniform.

John Buchan is today most famous for his thrilling novels, especially The Thirty Nine Steps . He was much more than a movelist, but diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, and poet as well. Buchan was born in Perth, Scotland. He was the oldest son of Rev. John Buchan and Helen (née Masterton) Buchan. I do npt yet have details on his early education or childhood in general. He was a clever boy and studied at the University of Glasgow and Brasenose College, Oxford with considerable academic success. After graduating he became a barrister of the Middle Temple (1901) and a private secretary to the High Commissioner for South Africa, Lord Milner (1901-03). Buchan returned to London and continued to parctice law, specializing in tax law. His interests were, however, increasingly drawn to literature. He began working for a publisher, Thomas Nelson and Sons (1906). He promoted the publication of inexpensive pocket editions of classic literature and played a key role in the

    Thomas Bewick
Thomas Bewick was born at Ovingham, (10-12 miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) at Cherryburn, a farmhouse. This house has now been turned into a museum of his life and work.
He became an apprentice to an engraver in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, having to use metal rather than wood. When he had finished his apprenticeship he worked with his preferred medium, wood.
I quote: Bewick's sense of humour is very clear in a number of his pictures which portray a very earthy side of life in such a way that makes the viewer laugh with him.
He died and was buried at Ovingham.
Two years after his death, a particular swan was found to be of a distinct breed and was named the Bewick Swan after Thomas.

A Head for Heights: Ruskin, Buchan and Topography Hermann Wittenberg (Work in Progress)
Mountains are to the rest of the body of the earth, what violent muscular action is to the body of man. The muscles and tendons of its anatomy are, in the mountain, brought out with force and convulsive energy, full of expression, passion, and strength; the plains and lower hills are the repose and the effortless motion of the frame, when its muscles lie dormant and concealed beneath the lines of beauty, yet ruling those lines in every undulation. This, then, is the first grand principle of the truth of the earth. The spirit of hills is action, that of the lowlands repose; and in between these there is to be found every variety of motion and rest... (John Ruskin Modern Painters 1903 (1843): 427) If only each hot country had been given a habitable mountain, they would be the only places in the world to live in. On the ordinary upland you dominate the flat country because you are higher up, but here we also look down on the plain because we are wholesome and cool and sane and they are fevered. We are a lighthouse to the whole of Equatoria, and if there were fifty other lighthouses in the Empire there would be no tropical problem. (John Buchan Lodge in the Wilderness 1906: 113) I The above two quotations, roughly bracketing the beginning and the end of the Victorian age, illustrate the development of ideas around the place and value of mountains in the culture of the West. Although Ruskin's metaphysical descriptions of montane topography owe a debt to the romantic movement's reverence of nature, and Buchan's ideas have more to do with the settler dilemma of colonial land ownership, both discourses attempt to imagine mountains (as opposed to their opposite, namely lowland) as a privileged space within a landscape system. This landscape is controlled by a range of binary distinctions: high against low, active versus passive, male versus female, home against the wild, temperate coolness against the tropical heat, health versus disease, and white against black.
