Mary Grant Bruce
Australian (1878- 1958) In her own lifetime, Mary Grant Bruce who was born at Sale, in the state of Victoria, Australia on 24 May 1878, was regarded as Australia's most popular author. She dominated Australian children's literature for the first half of this century. Her Irish born father, Eyre Lewis Bruce, was a pioneer surveyor in Gippsland, part of Victoria. In 1870 he had married Mary Whittakers, the daughter of William Whittakers. Mary as a little girl spent much time at Heyfield, a Gippsland cattle station (ranch) managed by one of her uncles, Charles Whittakers. No doubt her childhood experience of life on both properties provided the general background for the early "Billabong" books, at least. As a child, Mary Grant Bruce was devoted to her father and to her older brother Patrick, who died tragically in 1885, as a result of a shooting accident. Mary was sent to stay with her grandparents at Fern Hill on an extended visit. It was here that she began to write poems and stories at the age of the seven. She received a firm grounding in language from her mother, but her formal schooling began at the age of ten, in a private school run by Miss Beausire who encouraged her to enter the examination of the Melbourne Shakespeare Society, she won First price on 1895, 1897 and 1898.

He has selected four out-of-print Australian classics to be republished and introduced to a new generation of readers. As a child growing up in rural Australia, books were an essential part of my life. I read avidly, to enjoy the vicarious adventures that I experienced in their pages, to escape the boredom of daily life, but perhaps even more importantly, as I read I unconsciously soaked up an enormous amount of information about the world, our society, and our culture. When young people read only contemporary books, or watch only contemporary movies or television, it worries me that they will grow up without a real understanding of the foundations of our society and the way the world works.
