    ROBERT BROWNING
    HEAP cassia, sandal-buds and stripes
    Of labdanum, and aloe-balls,
From out her hair: such balsam falls
    Down sea-side mountain pedestals,
From tree-tops where tired winds are fain,
Spent with the vast and howling main,
To treasure half their island-gain. And strew faint sweetness from some old
Or shredded perfume, like a cloud
Mouldering her lute and books among,
As when a queen, long dead, was young.
    The Wanderers
OVER the sea our galleys went,
With cleaving prows in order brave A gallant armament: Each bark built out of a forest-tree Left leafy and rough as first it grew, Within and without, with black bull-hides, Seethed in fat and suppled in flame, So, each good ship was rude to see, Rude and bare to the outward view. But each upbore a stately tent Where cedar pales in scented row Kept out the flakes of the dancing brine, In fold on fold of the purple fine, That neither noontide nor star-shine Nor moonlight cold which maketh mad, Might pierce the regal tenement.

    Browning, Robert

Browning began poetry at a young age. According to his Memoirs his first poem was written when he was only five years old. His first book of poverty, Pauline was highly confessional writing that denied the youth of the writer. It was, however, criticised as being subjectively immature. He then chose to devote himself to writing plays. After ten years he decided that he was not going to find success as a playwright, but learned that he had an ability for adapting the technique of dramatic writings to poetry. This was used in Bells and Pomegranates , a series of poetic pamphlets that were well received. In 1845, he saw the poetry of

Pen Browning Bio Robert Browning is known to the general public as the writer of " The Pied Piper ," the hero of the play, and little more. However, he is buried in London's Westminster Abbey among the very greatest figures in British history. Who then was this Robert Browning who at his death at age 77 had risen to the heights of English literary society from his comparatively modest beginnings in the south London village of Camberwell? He was a very clever child and had the ambition to be a poet from his earliest days. His parents supported him in this endeavor until he was in his thirties and married Elizabeth Barrett. He was always true to his vocation but received little public appreciation until the publication of The Ring and the Book in 1868-1869 when he was in his fifties. This huge and highly original poem is beyond all but the most dedicated of modern readers. Nevertheless, the poem contains passages of great beauty and psychological insight. The final lines of the first book are a tribute to his wife: "Oh Lyric Love, half angel and half bird...."

Robert Browning was the older of the two children of Robert and Sarah Anna Wiedeman Browning. From his reasonably affluent parents Browning learned to love the artsbooks, paintings, music, and theatre. His father, a clerk in the Bank of England, was an unusually well-read man who owned a personal library of 6000 books. His mother was a devoutly religious woman and an accomplished pianist.
Robert Browning attended a private grammar school and then enjoyed the luxury of tutors in his home. By the age of fourteen he had learned Latin, Greek, French, and Italian. After fourteen, he received no formal education but was a prolific reader in his father's library. This included reading all fifty volumes of a set of reference books!

    Robert Browning
Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, a suburb of London. Young Robert spent much of his time in his father's private library of 6000 volumes in several languages. The chief source of his education
Browning became an admiror of Elizabeth's Barretts poetry in 1844. He began corresponding with her by letter. This was the start of one of the world's most famous romances. Their courtship lasted until 1846 when they were married. The couple moved to Italy that same year and had a son, Pen, later in 1849.
Robert did not become recognized as a poet, until after Elizabeth's death in 1861. After which, he was honored for the rest of his life as a literary figure.
Robert is perhaps best-known for his dramatic monologue technique. In his monologues, he spoke in the voice of an imaginary or historical character. Robert had a fondness for people who lived during the Renaissance. Most of his monologues portray persons at dramatic moments in their lives.
Below is a picture of Robert Browning's grave. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, in Poet's Corner.
