While still a child she showed her poetic gift, and her father published 50 copies of a juvenile epic, on the Battle of Marathon. At the age of 15 she fell off a horse, injuring her spine. This accident confined her to a recumbent position for several years, and she never fully recovered from the effects of this. Elizabeth would pass a lot of time writing poetry in a darkened room. Her early volumes of poetry such as “The Seraphim and Other Poems” (1838) (including "Cowper's Grave.") and “The Cry of Children” received wide critical acclaim and she became one of the most respected female poets, she was even mentioned as a successor to Wordsworth as Poet Laureate.

"Say over again"
"Say over again"
Say over again, and yet once over again, That thou dost love me. Though the word repeated Should seem "a cockoo-song," as thou dost treat it, Remember, never to the hill or plain, Valley and wood, without her cuckoo-strain 5 Comes the fresh Spring in all her green completed. Beloved, I, amid the darkness greeted By a doubtful spirit-voice, in that doubt's pain Cry, "Speak once more thou lovest!" Who can fear Too many stars, though each in heaven shall roll, 10 Too many flowers, though each shall crown the year? Say thou dost love me, love me, love me toll The silver iterance! only minding, Dear, To love me also in silence with thy soul.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning From an early age Elizabeth suffered a chronic lung ailment. She spent most of her time in a darkened room writing poety and many letters. The famous English poet Robert Browning admired her "Poems" (1844) so much that he wrote to her. They met, fell in love, and were secretly married in 1846. Soon after their marriage they ran away to Florence, Italy, where Elizabeth began a remarkable physical recovery. In 1849, they had a son, Robert Wiedeman Barrett Browning. She increasingly took up contemporary issues including the Italian Nationalist cause, the abolition of slavery in the United States, and the position of women in Victorian society. Elizabeth died on June 29, 1861. Many critics agree that Elizabeth's best poems appear in " Sonnets from the Portuguese ," a series of 44 sonnets recording the growth of her love for Robert Browning. ("Portuguese" was Robert's pet name for Elizabeth.) The 43rd is Elizabeth's most famous poem. It begins, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."

The child of Edward Barrett and Mary Graham-Clarke, Browning was born in Durham, England, the eldest of 12 children. Her family was well-to-do, both parents were from wealthy families. Her father owned sugar plantations in Jamaica established by his grandfather. Browning was educated at home by private tutors and learned French, Greek, and Latin, which was rare for a young women of her time.
Browning’s family encourage her interest in writing. Her father published his daughter’s The Battle of Marathon when she was only 14. At age 20, Browning wrote “An Essay on Mind” which was also privately published by her father. By this time, Browning was suffering from a chronic lung infection, possibly tuberculosis. Her illness kept her an invalid, but allowed her to focus on her writing. Also, her father had forbidden any of his children to marry, contributing to her isolation. In the 1830s, with the abolition of slavery and property disputes regarding the plantations in Jamaica, her families fortunes declined somewhat, though they still remained wealthy. They moved, first to Sidmouth and then London, where Browning came into contact with many of her contemporaries in English poetry, including William Wordsworth and Mary Russell Mitford.
