Mary Alwyn writes: Juan, or the Libertine and Miss Julie . During that time his attitude to symphonic writing had radically changed. His aim now was to compress the traditional four-movement symphony into a short, one movement work in four brief sections, thus preserving the dynamic contrasts of the traditional symphonic form. This Fifth symphony is dedicated, appropriately, to the immortal memory of Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682); physician, philosopher, botanist and archaeologist, Norwich's most famous citizen, whose great elegy on death was first published under the title Hydriotaphia: Urn Burial, or a discourse of the Sepulchral Urns lately found in Norfolk

The Problem of Memoria and Virtuoso Sensibility
in Sir Thomas Browne's The Garden of Cyrus
Even during his lifetime Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) enjoyed the reputation of being exceptionally well read and of having a stupendous memory. As a scholar and author he cultivated the ars memoriae indefatigably, arranging and storing thereby multifarious items of knowledge gained both from books and empirical observation. At the same time he was aware that the traditional mnemotechnical devices were outdated: He considered them the expression of a concept of learning no longer valid for his time. Consequently, he also called in question the old encyclopaedia of scholarly knowledge. In a paradoxical statement he stressed the necessity of eliminating part at least of traditional knowledge from memory in order to be open for new, unquestionable truths:
Knowledge is made by oblivion, and to purchase a clear and warrantable body of Truth, we must forget and part with much we know. (P: 165)
The old 'cultural technique' of ars memoriae underwent a considerable change in the course of the 17th century and was increasingly put to doubt. The main attacks turned against the 'unreasonable overload of memory', but also against the bent of scholars to parade their learning.

    Browne, Sir Thomas
Encyclopedia Article Browne, Sir Thomas (1605-1682), English physician and essayist, born in London, and educated at Winchester College, University of Oxford, and abroad at the universities of Montpellier, Padua, and Leiden. He received a degree in medicine from Leiden about 1633. He then lived and practiced medicine in Norwich, England. In 1671 he was knighted by Charles II for his antiquarian scholarship. Browne’s first important work, Religio Medici (Religion of a Doctor), probably written in 1635, is a rambling discourse in which skepticism and scientific reasoning are mixed with faith and revelation. Pseudodoxia Epidemica (1646), commonly known as Vulgar Errors, is encyclopedic in scope and length. In this work Browne speculates on the origins of human error and analyzes popular superstitions, but the book has an unscientific approach.

Thomas Browne, Sir : 1605 - 1682 1. Dates Born: London, 19 Oct. 1605, Died: Norwich, 19 Oct. 1682 2. Father Occupation: Merchant Thomas Browne was a silk merchant, who died when our Thomas Browne was eight years old. Our Thomas Browne was the only son. At the very least, the father was clearly prosperous. A contemporary source says that he left a "plentiful Fortune." Sir Thomas Browne went to Oxford as a Gentleman Commoner and had enough money to spend four years beyond his M.A. studying medicine on the continent. Add to this the fact that the widow remarried, to Sir Thomas Dutton, who had an estate in Ireland. The more I look at the evidence, the more I become convinced that "wealthy" is a better word to describe the circumstances in which Sir Thomas Browne grew up. 4. SIR THOMAS BROWNE 1605 - 1682
    Extracts from Christian Morals
[edited by J. Jeffrey 1716] Tread softly and circumspectly in this funambulatory Track and narrow Path of Goodness. Consider whereabout thou art in Cebes ' table. Think not that you are sailing from Lima to Manillia , when you may fasten up the Rudder, and sleep before the Wind. Rest not in an Ovation but a Triumph over thy Passions. Chain up the unruly Legion of thy breast. Lead thine own captivity captive, and be Cæsar within thyself. Though a Cup of cold water from some hand may not be without it's reward, yet stick not thou for Wine and Oyl for the Wounds of the Distressed. For the Justice of Death looks equally upon the dead, and Charon expects no more from Alexander than from Irus Charity becomes pious usury . . . what we adventure in a Cockboat may return in a Carrack unto us. He who thus casts his bread upon the Water shall surely find it again; for though it falleth to the bottom, it sinks but like the Ax of the Prophet, to arise again unto him. Covetousness . . . makes their own death sweet to others, bitter unto themselves; brings formal sadness, scenical mourning, and no wet eyes at the grave.
