Religio Medici
Sir Thomas Browne, London: 1642
Sp Coll Monro 1
The World to me is but a dream or mock-show, and we all therein but Pantalones and Anticks, to my severer contemplations. This month's choice is the Religio Medici , the most celebrated work of one of the great seventeenth century stylists of English prose, Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682). Although never originally intended for print, this meditative essay proved to be immensely popular and established Browne's fame as a writer.
Monro 1 (first pirated edition of 1642): frontispiece Variously described as a prose-poem, confession of faith and 'sort of private diary of the soul', the Religio Medici Religio Medici , his 'Conversation, it is like the Sun's, with all men, and with a friendly aspect to good and bad'. The serenity and good humour of the Religio Medici
Monro 1: page 1 (beginning of text)

Several leaves of prefatory matter including copies of correspondence between Browne and Sir Kenelm Digby were added to the 1643 edition. Although the main text was not altered substantially, there were several hundred minor changes. It is interesting to note that most of the additions to the text relate to contemporary upheaval: the first section of the second part, for example, denounces the multitude, and this addition was probably a reaction to the mass demonstrations and marches on Parliament in 1642 - a reminder that the early editions of the book appeared at the height of the first phase of the civil war. Our copy of the first pirated edition is curious for having some reader corrections to the text in the first few pages; although these demonstrate a close reading of the text, not all of the changes correspond to variants as provided by later editions.

Thomas Browne
Religio Medici, 1643
[Harvard Classics Introduction] Sir Thomas Browne was born in London on October 19, 1605, educated at Winchester and Oxford, and trained for the practise of medicine. After traveling on the Continent he finally settled as a physician in Norwich, and enjoyed a distinguished professional reputation. Later he became equally famous as a scholar and antiquary, and was knighted by Charles II on the occasion of the King's visit to Norwich in 1671. In 1641 he married, and he was survived by four of his ten children. He died on his seventy-seventh birthday. The "Religio Medici" is an excellent typical example of the author's style. At once obscured and enriched by his individual and sometimes far-fetched vocabulary, his full and sonorous periods remain the delight of readers with an ear for the cadences of English prose. The matter of the book also reveals a personality of great charm and humor, a mind at once surprisingly acute and surprisingly credulous, and a character of an exalted nobility. To The Reader [Footnote 1: Not in accordance.]

The Bundahis is a Pahlavi text, meaning that it was written in the Middle Persian language. (300 B.C. - 950 A.D.) It is one of two great works about the ancient prophetic religion, Zoroastrianism, which was founded around the 12th century B.C. The work itself took an extraordinary amount of time to come together, having finally stopped growing in 1178. There are three subjects that the Bundahis covers; creation, the nature of earthly creatures, and the Kayanians (an ancient dynasty of Iran). According to the Bundahis , Gryphons were the largest and the first of all birds upon creation, and is associated with the bat. There are also remarks of "the griffin of three natures". These three natures, I can only presume to mean those of the eagle, lion, and the monstrous (chimerical). Bundahis Online Chapter 14 Chapter 19 ... Abstract:
This essay offers a new perspective on the Tudor poet and maidservant Isabella Whitney's way of constructing herself as a female author in the early modern literary marketplace. While Whitney is most often read as a writer desiring textual communities through patronage and the exchange of letters, I note that throughout her miscellany A Sweet Nosgay (1573) she continually emphasizes her isolation from family and community. This stance, I argue, helps Whitney develop a sense of herself as a professional writer who must, after losing her post as a servant, achieve economic independence through the sale of her own verse. • Mirrour for magistrates. Churchyard, Thomas, 1520?-1604. Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. King Richard III. Shore, Jane, d. 1527? In literature. Richard III, King of England, 1452-1485 In literature. Blessing and cursing in literature.
    Abstract:
Thomas Churchyard's contribution to the 1563 edition of The Mirror for Magistrates, "Shore's wife," one of the first literary treatments of Jane Shore's role in pre-Tudor English affairs, is notable for its political exploitation of one of several of Edward IV's concubines. Narrating her fall from politically influential mistress of a king to an impoverished, friendless woman, Churchyard's Shore bitterly curses Richard III, whom she regards as the cause of her suffering. Engaging in the historiographical hazing of one of England's most unpopular monarchs, Churchyard's tragic heroine is subversive, if not treasonous, in her stance against Richard III. Berger, Harry.
