The sciences in the twentieth century have usually been divided into physical sciences, life sciences, and social sciences, but this classification of the sciences is largely a twentieth-century invention. In the nineteenth century and earlier it was common to divide the sciences into those that took a structural-experimental approach to their subjects—the philosophical sciences—and those that took an historical approach—the historical sciences. In the seventeenth century the same scholars who were debating the true nature of fossils were also collecting data on the history of the English language and the burial practices of the ancient Romans. In the nineteenth century many linguists compared their reconstructions of ancient languages to the work of geologists, and Charles Darwin in the Origin of Species explained the divergence of varieties of biological species by comparing them to language dialects. In this course we will examine the historical sciences as a coherent whole, reviewing their shared histories and exploring their common methods. Students will not only gain a factual understanding of the history and practice of the historical sciences but will also be encouraged to challenge the intellectual framework of the twentieth century that has dis-integrated the historical sciences and dispersed them across the academic landscape.

Though it be in the power of the weakest arm to take away life, it is not in the strongest to deprive us of death.
Browne, Sir Thomas
Death and Dying

Charity But how shall we expect charity towards others, when we are uncharitable to ourselves? Charity begins at home, is the voice of the world; yet is every man his greatest enemy, and, as it were, his own executioner.
Browne, Sir Thomas
Charity

Man is a noble animal, splendid in ashes, and pompous in the grave.

One of the errors discussed by Browne was the belief that 'The Tower of Babel was erected against a second Deluge' . Browne shows the evidence for this opinion, taken primarily from Josephus ' account (AD 94). He argues that the Tower of Babel could never have been built tall enough to provide a defence against supernatural flooding, and suggests that it is implausible that people who were afraid of a second deluge should ever have descended from the safety of the mountains to live in Mesopotamia, an area very prone to natural flooding. Browne suggests that that the building of the Tower was part of Nimrod's secret plan to establish his own dominon over people, and a symbol of the tyranny with which he ruled his subjects. Nimrod had promised the builders of the Tower that they would be famous, in order to convince them to construct a city from which he could rule. Through the confusion of tongues, God had frustrated Nimrod's plot to dominate mankind. Relevant books at Amazon:

Encyclopedia Article Browne, Sir Thomas (1605-1682), English physician and essayist, born in London, and educated at Winchester College, University of Oxford, and abroad at the universities of Montpellier, Padua, and Leiden. He received a degree in medicine from Leiden about 1633. He then lived and practiced medicine in Norwich, England. In 1671 he was knighted by Charles II for his antiquarian scholarship. Browne’s first important work, Religio Medici (Religion of a Doctor), probably written in 1635, is a rambling discourse in which skepticism and scientific reasoning are mixed with faith and revelation. Of the Red Sea, by Sir Thomas Browne
From Pseudodoxia Epidemica VI:ix . by Sir Thomas Browne (1646; 6th ed., 1672)
(note translation is slightly different) Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) Sir Thomas Browne was an English author and physician, born in London, educated at Oxford and abroad, knighted (1671) by Charles II. His Religio Medici, in which Browne attempted to reconcile science and religion, was written about 1635. After circulating in manuscript, it was first published in a pirated edition (1642); an authorized edition followed (1643). Inspired by the discovery of funeral urns near Norwich, he wrote Hydriotaphia: Urn Burial (1658), a solemn reflection on death and immortality, in which he expressed a belief in the futility of things here on earth. Published with Urn Burial was the more optimistic The Garden of Cyrus, a work devoted to the mystic symbolism of the number five. Browne's philosophy is now primarily of historical interest. It is the quality of his faith and, particularly, his mode of expression that make him one of the outstanding figures in the history of English literature. His other notable works are Pseudodoxia Epidemica (1646), commonly known as
