TITLE: General Grant on the Battlefield ARTIST: John Antrobus CATEGORY: Paintings MATERIALS: Oil on canvas SIZE: h: 84 x w: 64 in / h: 213.4 x w: 162.6 cm SUBJECT: War/Military REGION: American PRICE: Contact Gallery for Price GALLERY: R.H. Love Galleries, Inc. Send Email DESCRIPTION: The portrait was exhibited in the Committee Room of the U.S. House of Representatives. Reportedly, President Lincoln admired it. Noah Brooks (1830-1903), a Washington correspondent for the Sacramento Union, described it on 29 February: The painting is a full length portrait of Grant, of life size, and surrounded by the usual accessories of such a character upon canvas. The hero is standing by the wreck of a dismounted rebel fieldpiece . . . in the distant background, blue and hazy, is Missionary Ridge over which lines of national troops are moving; nearer is the general’s war horse, held by an orderly. . . . The painting . . . is highly meritorious, and is said by those who have known Grant to be an excellent portrait of the General. . . . It is proposed to ask Congress to purchase the painting and place it in the Capitol. The portrait was in the Capitol Building that February but it was not purchased. In addition, it was engraved, therefore the image was spread far and wide as a lithograph. Meanwhile, Antrobus had finished the design of a gold medal awarded to Grant on 17 December 1863.
