First Across the Continent: the Story of the Exploring Expedition of Lewis and Clark 1803-1804 [Secure Microsoft Reader/Adobe Reader 7/Mobipocket] by Noah Brooks Napoleon Bonaparte of France sold the vast tract of land known as the country of Louisiana in 1803. The price: fifteen million dollars. There was great opposition to this plan which was ridiculed by many who insisted the region was not only wild but uninhabitable and worthless. Lewis and Clark's successful expedition influenced the history of the West immensely and Brooks has done a marvelous job describing that time. 2001 Category: History Regular Club You Pay: Micropay Rebate: Cost After Rebate: You Save: Icon explanations: Discounted eBook; added within the last 7 days.

Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998, 291 pages. American journalist and author Noah Brooks (1830-1903) moved from his native Maine to Illinois, where he first met Abraham Lincoln while covering the 1856 presidential campaign. By 1860, Brooks was a newspaper editor in California using his editorial platform to support Lincoln's bid for the presidency. He left California in late 1862 for the nation's capital city to serve as the Washington correspondent for the Sacramento Daily Union, then California's best newspaper.
