A 10 page paper comparing the main character of Charlotte Bronte's novel with Bronte herself. The writer concludes that although there are a few ways in which Bronte's life is directly reflected in the book, the correspondences between Charlotte and Jane lie more in the way both heroines deal with a damaged self-concept through the development of their frank and passionate natures, and their determination to live according to their own moral principles. Bibliography lists nine sources.

The night is darkening round me
All hushed and still within the house

Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, dway
...
THE sun has set, and the long grass now

The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me,
And I cannot, cannot go. The giant trees are bending Their bare boughs weighed with snow, The storm is fast descending, And yet I cannot go. Clouds beyond clouds above me, Wastes beyond wastes below But nothing dread can move me - I will not, cannot go. All hushed and still within the house Without - all wind and driving rain. But something whispers to my mind Through rain and through the wailing wind - - Never again

CORRECT Emily Bronte (1818-1848) was a woman. She did, however, use the male pseudonym "Ellis Bell" for her first publication - a work of poetry authored jointly with her sisters Charlotte and Anne (who used the pseudonyms "Currer Bell" and "Acton Bell" on that occasion). Her novel Wuthering Heights appeared in 1847. Her sisters' first novels, Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Anne's Agnes Grey , were published in the same year. Emily Bronte died, at the age of 30, in 1848.
