Look twice before you leap.
Bronte, Charlotte
Caution

Consistency, madam, is the first of Christian duties.
Bronte, Charlotte
Consistency

Feeling without judgment is a washy draught indeed; but judgment untempered by feeling is too bitter and husky a morsel for human deglutition.
Bronte, Charlotte
Feelings

If we would build on a sure foundation in friendship, we must love friends for their sake rather than for our own. Bronte, Charlotte Friends and Friendship You had no right to be born; for you make no use of life. Instead of living for, in, and with yourself, as a reasonable being ought, you seek only to fasten your feebleness on some other person's strength. Bronte, Charlotte Parasites Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack the first is not to assail the last. To pluck the mask from the face of the Pharisee is not to lift an impious hand to the Crown of Thorns. Bronte, Charlotte Irreverence One does not jump, and spring, and shout hurrah! at hearing one has got a fortune, one begins to consider responsibilities, and to ponder business; on a base of steady satisfaction rise certain grave cares, and we contain ourselves, and brood over our bliss with a solemn brow. Bronte, Charlotte

Charlotte, the oldest of the three Brontë sisters, together with Emily and Anne formed part of a great literary Irish family. Formal education was discontinued when two of the other sisters in the family died from Tuberculosis. Their father, a clergyman, undertook their education but the sisters seemd largely to have educated themselves by reading extensively and writing stories from an early age. Charlotte became a governess and began to write to earn money. Her first novel, The Professor , was never published; however, Jane Eyre was an immediately sucessful and has since been regarded as one of the most famous novels in the English Language. Vilette was based on her experiences in Brussels.
Charlotte's writings were considered to be unconventional and not appropriate for a women writier of that time. She wrote under the pseudonym of Currer Bell.
Charlotte outlived her sisters. She eventually died while pregnant, within a few months of her marriage.

Emily, the most introspective of the Brontë sisters was briefly educated at school but so disliked being away from her home that she returned and continued with more informal schooling. Her early attempts at writing included poetry. Her work conveys a sense of mystery and longing that she experienced in her life. Her only novel, Wuthering Heights , is considered to be technically brilliant, with forthright and passionate language used to tell a fascinating saga. The brilliance of this novel was only acknowledged after her painful death from tuberculosis.

Perhaps the greatest writer of the three Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Emily Brontë published only one novel, WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1847), a story of the doomed love and revenge. The sisters also published jointly a volume of verse, POEMS BY CURRER, ELLIS AND ACTON BELL, but only two copies of the book was sold.

    http://www.unitel.cc/cBronte.htm
Theme Search Advanced Search The Ebookstore is a trademark of Unitel Inc Charlotte Bronte English Author A tragic destiny The third daughter of the Rev. Patrick Bronte and his wife Maria, had a tragic destiny. A year later, Charlotte discovered Emily's poems which she decided to publish under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Charlotte wrote then The Professor, which couldn't find any publisher, but the following year, her Jane Eyre, Emily's Wurthering Heights, and Ann's Agnes Grey were all published under the Bell pseudonyms. In 1848, her brother Branwell died, after he had become an alcoholic and a drug addict. Emily died a few months later, and Ann died the following year. At the age of 4 she lost her mother, being then the eldest of a family of 4. In 1826, after Mr. Bront‰ had brought home a box of wooden soldiers for his son to play with, Charlotte, Emily, Branwell and Ann, playing with the soldiers, formed the idea of writing about an imaginary world, which they named Angria. In 1844, the three Bront‰ sisters decided to found a school. It turned to a great disaster. In 1852, the Rev. Nicholls proposed marriage to Charlotte. Her father opposed himself violently at first. Charlotte, who was not in love, refused him. They finally got married in 1854, but Charlotte caught a pneumonia while she was expecting a child, and probably seized upon this illness as an opportunity to end her life. Charlotte died in 1855 after a long and painful illness.
