A thumbnail history of Shere The Romans were active in the Tillingbourne valley as we know from the villa at Abinger. The villa at Rapsley (Ewhurst) and the temple at Farley Heath are only a few miles away, but Shere has no known Roman remains apart from some re-used Roman tiles in the walls of St James's church. The Domesday survey of 1086 records a church at Shere, probably built of wood, and two mills. The population was engaged in tiling the soil and raising pigs. Before the Norman conquest the manor was held by Queen Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor. The church was rebuilt in stone between 1160 and 1190 and later enlarged. By the end of the eighteenth century the southern agricultural counties were suffering depression as prosperity moved to the industrializing midlands and the north. In Shere, the numbers claiming poor relief rocketed, rate payers were alarmed. The railway was built through the Tillingbourne valley, opening in 1849, it brought some early commuters to the parish and large houses were built on the edge of the village settlement.

For anyone interested in diaries, an invaluable new website is www.DiarySearch.com - the online version of Christopher Handley's Annotated Bibliography of Diaries Published in English (2nd edition). The website allows one to search for details of diaries, by author, title or keyword. The online version, however, has already been surpassed by a new edition of the bibliography, which can be purchased through The Day Books website. Another freely available bibliography covers diaries published in French . We would be interested to know of bibliographies of diaries from other countries as well. Other websites give information about bibliographies of women's diaries (from Adam Matthew Publications) and of diaries from World War I The Alexander Street Press has also compiled four extraordinary databases of published and unpublished diaries from the US Civil War , and by immigrants to North America North American women , and British and Irish women A new site dedicated to diaries, journals and notebooks is
