History of the Song:
by Dion Boucicault (1820-1890)
Oh Paddy dear, and did you hear the news that is going round
The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground
No more Saint Patrick's Day we'll keep - his colors can't be seen
For there's a cruel law against the wearing of the green.
I met with Naper Tandy and he took me by the hand
And he said, "How's poor old Ireland and how does she stand?"
She's the mosy distressful country that ever yet was seen For they're hangin men an' women for the wearing of the green And if the color we must wear is England's cruel Red Let it remind us of the blood that Ireland has shed Then pull the shamrock from your hat, and throw it on the sod And never fear, "'twill take root there, tho' under foot 'tis trod". When the law can stop the blades of grass from growing as they grow And when the leaves in summer-time, their color dare not show

Theatre in Melbourne 1890 The Theatre Royal, Melbourne, 1880s For eleven continuous years, Mr. Sheridan has been playing the Widow O'Brien, his record of actual representations during that period closely approaching three thousand times, so that his name has become inseparable from his performance. Mr. Sheridan, like every other actor, who possesses the skill and experience to think out a part, commenced on the lowest rung of the theatrical ladder, with a very small part and a very small salary, and in his twenty-six years association with the stage, has had as thorough a training as any actor in Australia.
Mr. John Francis Sheridan, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, United States, on October 7, 1848, and as he was originally intended to be an engineer, he passed some months in a foundry, so as to gain practical thraining of his future calling. The work, However, proving distatsteful, the lad went on the stage, making his first appearance on April 12, 1864, at the Theatre Royal, Pawtackett, Rhode Island, in a part that could not be said to tax his memeory too heavily as the sole dialogue consisted of two "Yes, sir's" and one "No, sir", he had to encounter the usual struggles and strivings of a beginner, but in the end found his footing secure, although not till several years had been spent in very hard work. From 1870 hsi lucky star commenced to rise, and he became known as a comedian who might be relied on to get a good effect out of every character he presented.

T he W earing of T he G reen by Dion Boucicault (1820-1890)
O Paddy dear, and did you hear the news that going round?
The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground;
St. Patrick's Day no more we'll keep, his colours can't be seen,
For there's a bloody law against the wearing of the green.
I met with Napper Tandy and he took me by the hand,
And he said, "How's poor old Ireland, and how does she stand?"
She's the most distressful counterie that ever yet was seen,
And they're hanging men and women for the wearing of the green. Then since the colour we must wear is England's cruel red,
Sure Ireland's sons will ne'er forget the blood that they have shed.
You may take a shamrock from your hat and cast it on the sod, It will take root and flourish there though underfoot it's trod. When law can stop the blades of grass from growing as they grow, And when the leaves in summer-time their verdure dare not show, Then will I change the colour that I wear in my caubeen But 'till that day, please God, I'll stick to wearing of the green. But if at last our colour should be torn from Ireland's heart

The Victorian Marionette Theatre By John McCormick, in collaboration with Clodagh McCormick, in collaboration with John Phillips * Order *

The Victorian Marionette Theatre
In this fascinating and colorful book, researcher and performer John McCormick focuses on the marionette world of Victorian Britain between its heyday after 1860 and its waning years from 1895 to 1914. Situating the rich and diverse puppet theatre in the context of entertainment culture, he explores both the aesthetics of these dancing dolls and their sociocultural significance in their life and time.
The history of marionette performances is interwoven with live-actor performances and with the entire gamut of annual fairs, portable and permanent theatres, music halls, magic lantern shows, waxworks, panoramas, and sideshows. McCormick has drawn upon advertisements in the Era , an entertainment paper, between the 1860s and World War I, and articles in the , a paper for showpeople, in the first fifty years of the twentieth century, as well as interviews with descendants of the marionette showpeople and close examinations of many of the surviving puppets.
