Name: Dion Boucicault Birth Date: December 26, 1820 Death Date: Place of Birth: Dublin, Ireland Place of Death: New York, United States Nationality: American Gender: Male Occupations: playwright, actor Dion Boucicault Main Biography The Irish-American playwright and actor Dion Boucicault (1820-1890) was a theatrical rather than a dramatic talent, more an adapter than a creator of plays. He was noted for ingenious stage effects. Dion Boursiquot, later Boucicault, was born in Dublin on Dec. 26, 1820, a year after his mother's divorce from a wine merchant. When the budding actor dropped out of London University in 1837, he turned to the stage. His first success was London Assurance In London he adapted French romantic melodrama for Charles Kean and learned from him the technique of staging sensational scenesa knowledge that would serve him well in America. In 1853 Boucicault "eloped" with Agnes Robertson, a London star, to New York, where for many years she played leading roles in his plays. He branched out from costume melodrama to quasi-realistic and topical plays filled with sensational theatrical effects.

Old Becomes New Again at The Shaughraun
HISTORY
From 1875 to 1919 this melodramatic play was performed annually in Boston with the playwright, Dion Boucicault, starring in the role of Conn O'Kelly, the Shaughraun himself. Since that time The Shaughraun hasn't been performed nor hardly heard of, at least not in America. This year, nearly 80 years later, the Huntington Theatre in Boston brought it back to life, making the old new again. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dion Boucicault ("boo-SEE-ko"), author of The Shaughraun Although Dion Boucicault wrote many plays, the most famous were The Colleen Bawn and The Shaughraun . "During his lifetime, productions of The Shaughraun In 1883 his wife Agnes filed for divorce, claiming infidelity as he fathered a son by actress Kathryn Rogers. The negative publicity was good for this tour of The Shaughraun as people came to watch the evil man. Two years later, at age 64, he married Louise Thorndike, an American actress only 21 years old. It wasn't for three more years after this marriage that Agnes was granted a divorce. At this time the public scandal caught up with him and he began to lose popularity. His acting company was disbanded, his producing career ended, and he died two year later. What a fascinating life this man had. What a great motion picture it would make... Perhaps someday I'll write it. PLOT
A rather complicated interwoven plot is one reason this play can survive today. In this story we have character actors, straight men and sappy but smart women, and of course several bad guys all with their own agenda. There's political intrigue, a jailbreak, death (kind of), mystery, romance, and slapstick. Since this play hasn't been performed in many many years I'm providing a plot summary - so here in a nutshell (that means paragraph in this case) is the plot:

OF MUSIC ARRANGED AND PUBLISHED
BY J.A. PARKS MUSIC COMPANY
INTRODUCTION last revised April 10, 2005 This portion of the J.A. Parks web site contains links to information about composers, arrangers and lyricists / librettists of the music arranged and published by J.A. Parks. The stimulus to develop this portion was an e-mail reference request from a Scottish researcher received three weeks after the J.A. Parks page was first posted on the web. Many of the composers and librettists in Parks' publications are "forgotten." Some are remembered today only for one or two lyrics or a single melody. Still others are of significant historical interest to be mentioned in standard reference works such as Grove s. A few are "household names." The links on this page open little "snapshots" which taken together form a mosaic of late 19th and early 20th Century musical tastes and personalities. We have added two or more links for a few personalities in cases where each of the sites has information not provided by the other(s). We have also included "capsule biographies" for a few people who were York residents or were otherwise personally connected to York or J.A. Parks. We started the initial composition of this page in late September, 2003. We have relied primarily on searches in the major web search engines
