ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
literature
Boswell, James (1740-1795)
The life of Samuel Johnson.
(2 vols)
London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, 1791.
Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson is unquestionably one of the great biographies in the English language. Indeed, in recent decades there has been much scholarly debate over wherein its greatness lies. Scholarly interest was also aroused earlier last century when a large number of hitherto unknown pages of original manuscript from the work were found, first in an ebony cabinet in 1927 and again in a stable loft in 1940. For most readers however, it is simply a work to be enjoyed and quoted. (See the caption for Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy

"We cannot tell the precise moment when a friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over."

(from Life of Johnson) Scottish lawyer, essayist, known for his two-volume biography THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D (1791). Boswell met Samuel Johnson in May 1763 and the two became fast friends. Boswell was born in Edinburgh the son of Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, a judge in the supreme courts of Scotland. Boswell attended the University of Edinburgh (1753-1753), where he studied arts and law. He was keeping a journal and writing poems from the age of 18. At 19 he made his first visit to London, and a few years later, on his second visit, Boswell met Dr. Johnson. In 1769 Boswell married his cousin Margaret Montgomerie; they had seven children. Though his visits to London were restricted to the vacations of the Court of Session, Boswell maintained his contact with Johnson, and was elected to the Literary Club in 1773. The members included some of the most famous men of the time. With Johnson, who described Boswell as 'the best travelling companion in the world', the friends made their celebrated tour of Scotland and Hebrides.

Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." Special Collections Exhibitions Enlarging the prospects of happiness Introduction Great cities of Italy ... Check lists For an English audience, Italy was both alluring and alarming. Abounding with classical ruins and legendary statues and paintings, Italy was also separated from England by a precipitous route over the Alps and, after Henry VIII, by a fundamental religious divide. Rome was the ultimate aim first of pious pilgrims and later of the Grand Tourist. Italy was the best-known destination for English travellers, and few visitors would have set out without having read at least one of the major accounts of Italian attractions.
Classics graduate and grand tourist
A grand tourist himself, Joseph Addison made good use of his classical studies to compile what became the foremost English guide to antiquities in Italy. Essentially a geographical annotation of Latin literature and history, Addison's work addresses young gentlemen steeped in a classical education. The title Remarks indicates its rather casual structure and easy familiarity, though most of us would find its constant and frequently obscure allusions annoying.

Boswell and Brydon
By the second half of the eighteenth century, the grand tour had been so frequently recounted that Boswell and Brydone both sought more remote corners of Italy. Boswell's usual irrepressible enthusiasm and undaunted effrontery secured him the acquaintance of Pascal Paoli, a freedom fighter of his day, while Boswell's published account (1768) earned for its author the life-long soubriquet of Corsican Boswell. Brydone dedicated his account to William Beckford, responsible for the fashion of picturesque tours, who had initially suggested Brydone visit Sicily:

A year later, Dryden turned the table around and began writing in blank verse . This led him to the creation of his greatest play, All For Love (1678). After becoming Poet Laureate (1668) and historiographer royal (1670), Dryden produced a series of satires . His most successful was Absalom and Achitopel (1681). The same decade also withheld Religio laici The Hind and The Panther (1687), and William III (1688). Before his death at the age of 69, Dryden also wrote a few critical works.
Pepys, Samuel

Samuel Pepys was born in London, England and was educated at Cambridge. After going to university, Pepys joined the naval service and quickly moved up the ranks which soon brought him to the position as a secretary to the Admiralty (1672). After being accused of taking part in the Popish Plot (1679), Pepys was imprisoned and lost his position in office. In 1684, Pepys was reappointed to his position, and in that same year he also was appointed the president of the Royal Society. Pepys was never a major writer but from January 1, 1660, to May 31, 1669, he held a diary. His philosophy on everyday subjects and his paragraphs on the Great Plague (1665-1666), The Great Fire of London (1666), and the arrival of the Dutch fleet (1665-1667), have made his diary intriguing to many. Due to the diary being written in cipher, the diary was not decoded until 1825. Pepys died at the age of 76.
