Administrative/Biographical History
Auchinleck is situated in Ayrshire, in Scotland's large Strathclyde region, 21 kilometres east of the town of Ayr. The town has a population (based on 1991 figures at least) of 4,160. Auchinleck is associated with the Boswell family through the granting of the estate to Thomas Boswell, a 'cadet' of the Balmuto line, on his marriage to the daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Auchinleck in 1504. Thomas had been one of the court favourites of James IV and he died with the king at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. On his appointment as Lord of Session in 1754, Alexander Boswell (1706-1782) took the title of Lord Auchinleck. It was Alexander Boswell who had Auchinleck House built. His son, James Boswell, the diarist and biographer of Samuel Johnson, was born at nearby Auchinleck House, and is buried in the churchyard in Auchinleck.

His private papers also reveal "Bozzie" as a most distinguished diarist. James Boswell was born in Edinburgh on Oct. 29, 1740. He was the eldest of the three sons of the advocate Alexander Boswell, Lord of Auchinleck in Ayrshire from 1749, and Euphemia Erskine Boswell. The Boswells were an old and well-connected family, having held the barony of Auchinleck since 1504 and having intermarried with the nobility. Early Life As a child, Boswell was delicate and suffered from some type of nervous ailment. At 13 he enrolled in the arts course at the University of Edinburgh, studying there from 1753 to 1758. Midway in his studies he suffered a serious depression and nervous illness, but when he recovered he had thrown off all signs of delicacy and attained robust health. Boswe.....

We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over. So in a series of kindness there is, at last, one which makes the heart run over.

An Introduction

A contempory cartoon of James Boswell. In one hand he holds "My Journal" and in the other "Materials for the Life of Sam Johnson LLD". James Boswell of Auchinleck's first claim to fame was as biographer of Samuel Johnson. In recent years, it his voluminous journals which have claimed our attention, for the detailed and opinionated chronicle they provide of the culture and society of his time. For the Ayrshire historian, the journals offer an unrivalled insight into the people and institutions which ruled the county in the second half of the eighteenth century. Whether friend (for example John Hamilton of Sundrum - "I esteemed him as an honest man") or sometime foe (for example Sir Adam Fergusson of Kilkerran - "a man who distinguished himself by his regard for religion, though his politics were bad"), Boswell recorded his thoughts on his neighbours and fellow lairds. They dined together, rode to county meetings in Ayr, deliberated on defence, the state of the nation, the improvement of their estates, exploitation of minerals, making the roads, and Boswell recorded much of what passed in his journals, usually giving particular credit to his own thoughts or witticisms. The Boswell papers reside at Yale University in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Yale has published a long series of Boswell Editions divided into two main categories: Trade Editions, for the general reader; and Research Editions, for the academic market. Boswell's London Journal Boswell is best known as the author of The Life of Samuel Johnson 1791. Born in Scotland, and having trained initially as a lawyer, he stayed in London in 1762-3 and decided to become a writer. He met Samuel Johnson in 1763. His London journal shows his determination to sample all the delights of life in the capital, which he visited frequently, spending much time with Johnson. Reynolds got to know Boswell in the early 1770s, though they did not become especially close until after Johnson's death in 1784.

Robert Burns
Robert Burns (1759-1796) is considered Scotland's greatest poet. Best known for his feeling descriptions of country life and for satires against the political and religious hypocrisy of the day, Burns wrote much of his poetry in his broad Scots dialect . The eldest child of William and Agnes Burnes (the elder Burnes spelled his name with an "e"), Burns was born in Ayrshire and lived a life of hard labor and poverty as he struggled with his father to make a series of poor farms productive. By 1786, with his father dead, and more failed farms to the family credit, Burns nearly emigrated to Jamaica. His first volume of poetry, however, was published that year to great acclaim, and Burns became the darling of Edinburgh. Further editions of poetry developed Burns' international reputation. Late in his life, supporting himself as an exciseman, Burns helped to collect and also wrote a wide-range of traditional Scottish songs. B oswell G uide

Boswell was born in Edinburgh, and educated at the universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Utrecht. Boswell was admitted to both the Scottish and English bars and practiced law but devoted himself primarily to the pursuit of a literary career. His most important early work was An Account of Corsica (1768), a sympathetic study of the struggle for independence of that island, written after an extended tour of Europe.
In 1763 Boswell met the writer Samuel Johnson, and from 1772 until Johnson's death in 1784 the two men were closely associated. In 1773 Boswell was admitted to Johnson's Literary Club, which included the statesman Edmund Burke , the writer Oliver Goldsmith , the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds , and the actor David Garrick . Thereafter, Boswell devoted much of his time to compiling detailed records of Johnson's activities and conversation. Boswell's accounts covered periods of daily association with Johnson in London and also described a trip that the two friends made through Scotland to the
