  • N ot all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. Dave Barry
  • B avarian monks brewed double bocks as sustenance for their Lenten fasts. Since they were allowed drink but no food, they developed a nourishing, high-alcohol beer.
  • N othing quenches the thirst like a wheat beer, or sharpens the appetite like an India pale ale. Nothing goes as well with seafood as a dry porter or stout, or accompanies chocolate like an imperial stout. Nothing soothes like a barley wine. These are just a few of the specialty styles of beer. Michael Jackson
  • S o popular is beer, the world's best-selling alcoholic drink, that it is often taken for granted. Yet scientific analysis shows that a glass of beer has within it as many aromas and flavors as fine wine. Not everyone understands this, but an increasing number of people do. Michael Jackson

Pater Bakker (ed.) The Typology and Dialectology of Romani GEORGE BORROW’S ROMANI Ian Hancock Introduction George Borrow (1803-1881) has stood as the acknowledged source of inspiration for countless Romanophiles (as well as Romanophobes) ever since his literary heyday in the 19th century; in fact Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald saw himself as quite “unfashionable” (1944: x ) because he was one of the few who didn’t make his “first acquaintance with [Gypsies] in the pages of George Borrow.” From Prosper Merimée, who “drew from Borrow his inspiration for Carmen” (Ridler, 1996:55), to criminologist Detective Samuel Haines whose monograph on American Gypsy crime relied largely on the “ Romano La Volil sic ; 1989:2), George Borrow’s writings have stimulated the creative muse for innumerable writers about Gypsies for more than a century and a half. Borrow spent the greater part of his life studying languages, a love which was kindled while he was a boy learning Latin and Greek at Norwich Grammar School, and he was already able to translate some twenty as diverse as Armenian and Middle Welsh “with facility and elegance” by the end of his teen years (Ridler, 1996:451-453). Quotations About / On: HERO Page: We live by our imaginations, by our admirations, by our sentiments. The child walks amid heaps of illusions, which he does not like to have disturbed. The boy, how sweet to him his fancy! how dear the story of barons and battles! What a hero he is, whilst he feeds on his heroes! What a debt is his to imaginative books!
(Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), U.S. essayist, poet, philosopher. "Illusions," The Conduct of Life (1860).)
More quotations from: Ralph Waldo Emerson All his works might well enough be embraced under the title of one of them, a good specimen brick, "On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History." Of this department he is the Chief Professor in the World's University, and even leaves Plutarch behind.
(Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), U.S. philosopher, author, naturalist. "Thomas Carlyle and His Works" (1847), in The Writings of Henry David Thoreau, vol. 4, p. 350, Houghton Mifflin (1906).)
More quotations from: Henry David Thoreau In our world of big names, curiously, our true heroes tend to be anonymous. In this life of illusion and quasi-illusion, the person of solid virtues who can be admired for something more substantial than his well-knownness often proves to be the unsung hero: the teacher, the nurse, the mother, the honest cop, the hard worker at lonely, underpaid, unglamorous, unpublicized jobs.
