Rasche Ausbreitung weltweit, in Deutschland 1886. In 103 Ländern arbeiten 16000 Gemeinden (Korps) und Vorposten sowie 9000 soziale Einrichtungen und Schulen, 25000 Geistliche (Offiziere)und etwa 3 Millionen Mitglieder. Offizielle Zeitschrift ist der "Kriegsruf".
    Größe:
in Deutschland 47 Gemeinden (Korps) mit etwa 2000 Mitgliedern, 41 diakonische Einrichtungen, 133 ordinierte Geistliche (Offiziere)
Aus der Selbstdarstellung der Heilsarmee zitieren wir:
" Der Gründer der Heilsarmee, William Booth, wurde am 10. April 1829 in Nottingham (Mittelengland) geboren.

General Information The Salvation Army is an international Christian evangelical organization that was founded in London in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist minister and evangelistic preacher. As a religious movement engaged in social services, the army has, since its inception, made a goal of approaching sociological problems with Christian concern. BELIEVE

In keeping with its name (adopted 1878), the Salvation Army is operated on a military pattern. Ministers are officers with military rank, and the general, headquartered in London, is the army's top international leader. Parishioners are soldiers, the main center of worship is the corps, and the Articles of War are signed as a declaration of faith by enrolling Salvationists. Both officers and soldiers are entitled, as missionaries of God, to wear the army uniform and to bear the symbolic red shield. Basic training for each officer, following a required high school education, is a 2 year in - residence course at a Salvation Army School for Officers' Training. Besides formal study, the curriculum includes practical field experience in corps community centers and other institutions as well as orientation in all possible areas of Salvation Army service. By the middle of the 19th century, England had become a largely industrial nation. Many more people had moved from the countryside to live in the growing cities and towns. The way the population was spread through the country had changed. On the other hand, the Church of England parishes had not, and could only alter slowly. Most of the new town dwellers grew up outside the care of the Church of England. Methodists, with their simple preaching places and local preachers, did have greater success in reaching them. The Blind Beggar Pub -
William Booth preached outside this pub in 1865. Other nonconformist churches also expanded into the new urban areas, but many people in the industrial areas remained untouched by Christianity. Part of the problem was the linking of social classes to particular Christian denominations. Only in some of the chapels would working class people feel at home.

    "A Vision of the Lost"
    by William Booth
    William Booth
Founder of the Salvation Army n one of my recent journeys , as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the condition of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out of the window, I seemed to see them all... millions of people all around me given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant- willfully ignorant in many cases- and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the Throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision.
I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightening flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again.
In that ocean I thought I saw myriads of poor human beings plunging and floating, shouting and shrieking, cursing and struggling and drowning; and as they cursed and screamed they rose and shrieked again, and then some sank to rise no more.

Nottingham's most celebrated war hero Captain Albert Ball was born in Lenton, on 21 August 1897. He is known to be the most renowned fighter pilot in the RFC who shot down 44 planes in the First World War. For the most conspicuous and consistent bravery, Captain Albert Ball was awarded the Victoria Cross on 8 June 1917. "The most daring, skilful, and successful pilot the Royal Flying Corps has ever had", Major-General Trenchard Key Achievements Victoria Cross (1917); Legion d'Honneur; Croix de Chevalier; Russian Order of St.George. Web: www.times1190.freeserve.co.uk/albert.htm BENDIGO Sport - Bare-knuckle fighter Some people think that he was called Bendigo because of the way he bobbed and weaved, but a relative, Kevan Middleton, says that is not true. "He was named Abednigo by his mother when he was born. This became Bendigo at some point (easier on the tongue presumably)". His real name was William Thompson. He was an exceptional fighter who was scientific, quick and tricky. He fought from a left-hand stance but could shift quickly and hit hard with both fists. Bendigo was also an all-round athlete who was agile in movement and a fast runner. In 1955 he was elected to the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame.
