Salvation Army, international religious and charitable organization, dedicated to the propagation of the Christian faith and to the furnishing of various forms of assistance to persons in need of spiritual solace and material aid. It was founded in 1865 in London by the English Methodist minister William Booth. It was originally founded as the Christian Mission, with the aim of carrying on evangelical and social-welfare work among the inhabitants of the slum areas of London. The mission rapidly expanded its activities; in 1878 it was reorganized along its present quasi-military lines and was renamed the Salvation Army. Booth was accorded the title of general, and the officers and members of the organization were given military ranks and titles in accordance with their duties. The organization was later organized into territories, each of which had jurisdiction over a specified country or other major geographical area. Salvation Army members preach on sidewalks and other outdoor areas, holding thousands of so-called street meetings, or open air meetings, annually in the United States. The doctrines of the group, based on the teachings of the Bible, are considered fundamentally Christian. Social services are offered without discrimination as to race or creed. The activities of the Salvation Army are financed by voluntary contributions. Its official publication is The War Cry. International headquarters is in London; U.S. headquarters is in Alexandria, Virginia.

page: Affectionately known as "Sal" or "Sally" Army, the Salvation Army may be best known to most modern queers for its chain of thrift stores, which have filled the closets and furnished the apartments of many who are unable to afford to buy new. Outside the doors of the thrift shops, urban dwellers might recognize bell-ringing "soldiers" of the Salvation Army collecting donations in trademark red kettles during the Christmas season. Television news watchers have undoubtedly seen Salvation Army workers providing food and shelter to victims of disasters and emergencies all over the United States and in over 100 countries internationally. From its international headquarters in London and its American headquarters in New York, the Salvation Army currently operates hundreds of hospitals, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, community centers, and recreation facilities. This printed circular letter was sent in advance of the first overseas Primitive Methodist Mission.
Even more so than Britain, Methodism in the United States gave birth to a number of other denominations, which look to John Wesley as their founder. The Church of the Nazarene for example originated almost 100 years ago principally as a revivalist break-away from the Methodist mainstream and now has 12,000 congregations world wide.

Missionaries followed British soldiers and administrators as the Empire expanded. The first Methodist mission to India arrived in 1817 and, by the time of independence in 1947, there were 175,000 members connected to the British Methodist missions and thousands more to those of American Methodism.

English Speaking Protestantism
General Essay on English-Speaking Protestantism
In 1534 the Church of England separated itself from the Church of Rome because the Pope had refused to allow the English monarch, Henry VIII, to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon. This decision placed the English monarch, rather than the Pope, at the head of the Church of England. Almost at once certain reforms were put into effect consistent with those that were happening on the continent. The monasteries were dissolved and confiscated by the crown and the Bible was translated into the vernacular. The Protestant reforms were taken further by Henry's son, Edward VI (r. 1547-1553), who introduced the Book of Common Prayer in 1552. Following the brief and bloody reign of Mary Tudor (r.1553-58), who sought to reconcile England with Rome, Elizabeth I (r. 1558-1603) reestablished the authority of the monarch over the English church through the Act of Supremacy of 1559. The definitive statement of the Church of England was produced in the form of the Thirty-Nine Articles of 1563, which combine a Lutheran understanding of justification and a reformed understanding of election and the sacraments. The second branch to emerge out of the Puritan tradition were the Baptists. The Baptist church came into being when a group under the leadership of Thomas Helwys and John Smyth, a former Anglican preacher, fled to Holland and instituted the practice of adult baptism. In 1611 Thomas Helwys and some of his followers returned to England where their movement grew steadily in spite of sustained persecution by church and political authorities. In England the Baptists split into two groups: the General and Particular Baptists. The General Baptists accepted the Arminian view of salvation; that grace was available to all people and that people had the freedom to resist grace. (This form of theology is called Arminian because it is named after its proponent Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609).) The Particular Baptists adopted the Calvinistic view that God's grace was available only to a particular group elected by God for salvation.
