The Spanish throne had been vacant for two years. The Spanish, and also the Prussian, choice was Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Simaringen. The French objected and the Franco-Prussian war began. The French lost and the Emperor Napoleon III was captured. William of Prussia became the German Emperor. Gladstone decided it was time to re-structure and re-equip the army. In 1872 Gladstone introduced the Ballot Act. For the first time in British history, men would vote in secret. This was to work against him in 1874 when he lost to Disraeli. In 1875 Britain bought £4million worth of shares in the Suez Canal from the Egyptians. This amounted to nearly half the total issue thereby safeguarding the water route to India. Britain was to hold this share until 1956. General William Booth GENERAL WILLIAM BOOTH (1829-1912)

William Booth's Vision
[Editor's Note: General Booth considered the following account to be a vision. If nothing else, it is definitely an illustrative story with biblical meaning that Christians of all generations can apply in their own lives - though any "implied teaching" in the story must only be received in light of Scriptural truth.]
...In my vision I thought that so far as the world was concerned, Agur's
prayer [from Proverbs] was answered in regard to me, for I had neither poverty nor riches. All my wants were supplied. I had leisure, and friends,
and home, and all that was necessary to make me happy.
Then also, I thought that I was a Christian. Most of my close friends professed to be the same. We visited together at each other's homes, joined in amuse- ments, business, politics and many other things. In short, we bought and sold, and married, and acted as though the world we were in were going to last forever.
In this vision I was one who was active in religious activities. In fact, I

WILLIAM BOOTH - FOUNDER OF THE SALVATION ARMY
The Founder and first General, Booth was born in England in 1829 and converted in 1844. He died, or in Army terminology was "promoted to glory", in 1912. In Booth's lifetime, the rag-tag Salvation Army grew into a giant of international evangelism and gained a modicum of acceptance. In his lifetime the Army was established in 58 countries and colonies. William Booth (1829-1912) was a brave man, hard to the point of militancy yet soft enough to cry tears of compassion with those seeking answers to their spiritual quest, or facing grief and bereavement. Booth worked tirelessly to bring Christ to people through the words of the gospel and Christian love in action. General Booth once said he would stand on his head and play a tambourine with his feet if it would bring people to God. The Founder of The Salvation Army, Booth did a great deal to take a relevant Christianity to the masses, meeting people at the point of their needs. With its title inspired by the adventures of Scottish missionary and African explorer, Dr David Livingstone, Booth's book

Introduction
The Salvation Army was founded in London in 1865 by the Revd William Booth. First known as the East London Christian Mission (later the Christian Mission) it changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878. Booth, an ordained minister with the Methodist New Connection, had never intended to establish another Christian church. Instead, his original aim had been to send his converts to established churches. However, he soon discovered that many of his followers were not attending any church and to rectify this he formed the East London Christian Mission. In addition to preaching Booth became involved in providing food and shelter for the poor and in the rehabilitation of alcoholics. When the Christian Mission became the Salvation Army in 1878, it was organised in a quasi-military fashion, with Booth becoming

THE CITIES AND D.L. MOODY Cities grew because of the industrial revolution. With urban growth came serious problems; problems that still defy solution. This page looks at the city's problems and then examines the life of the greatest revivalist of the late 1800s. I. BACKGROUND When winds of revival swept the country, no one completely ignored the cities but most of America's population was rural. By the 1830s, evangelist C.G. Finney began concentrating on city evangelism. He believed the nation's cultural life flowed from the cities t o rural areas. While other revivalists held occasional meetings in cities, Finney focused on the urban masses. Two factors complicated evangelistic work in America's cities. First, many farm boys headed for the cities to find work. You see this movement from the farm to the city as early as the 1820s. When these young men reached the city several changes occurred. The city, with its many temptations and material opportunities, undercut their rural value system. Second, continuing immigration decreased work opportunities for native born Americans. Most of the immigrants settled in the cities. European immigrants also found themselves cut off from their previous value system. American cities grew rapidly. Chicago illustrates this best. Located in America's heartland, Chicago was a collection of seventeen houses in 1833. Eighty years later, Chicago had grown into the fifth largest city in the world and by 1900 it's population numbered 1,700,000.

Who Cares?
By General William Booth
On one of my recent journeys, as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the conditions of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out the window, I seemed to see them all - millions of people all around me - given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant - willfully ignorant in many cases - and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision. I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightning flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again. In that ocean I thought I saw myriads of poor human beings plunging and floating, shouting and shrieking, cursing and struggling and drowning; and as they cursed and screamed, they rose and shrieked again, and then some sank to rise no more.

He was not a great scientist, but his writings helped scientific progress. His book The New Atlantis was a political fable, but in it he describes many later inventions (does that make him a science fiction writer?) He was a lawyer and then a judge. He was accused of taking bribes in 1621 (but all judges did so in that day) and confessed to some of the charges. Because King James I liked him, the fine of 40,000 pounds was erased. Bacon, Roger
(c1214-1294) Studied mathematics, astronomy, optics, alchemy, and languages; the first European to describe in detail the process of making gunpowder, and he proposed flying machines and motorized ships and carriages. Bacon (as he himself complacently remarked) displayed a prodigious energy and zeal in the pursuit of experimental science; indeed, his studies were talked about everywhere and eventually won him a place in popular literature as a kind of wonder worker. Bacon therefore represents a historically precocious expression of the empirical spirit of experimental science, even though his actual practice of it seems to have been exaggerated. See entry in

Founder of the Salvation Army It was the summer of 1865, and London, England was the focal point of the world. Great Britain was the most powerful nation on earth - as it was said - "the sun never set on the Victorian Empire." Yet the city of London was fast growing from a rural city into a travesty. Almost a million souls crowded into alleys and tenement buildings. Parts of London held over 200 people to the acre; 370 sewers flushed into the River Thames; three million chimneys poured soot and smoke into the air; rats filled grimy, brick buildings; the warm summer air of market places reeked of decaying vegetables, gin, animal dung and smoke. The whole city stank. Cholera epidemics sprang up now and again taking the highest toll on the poor. The Victorian Empire was sharply divided between the one-fourteenth of the population which comprised the English Lords of the upper class, and the cockney paupers of the destitute lower class. In the alleys and by the docks often lay the dead, the sick, and the dying. Human refuse went untended by the Lords of the richest nation on earth.
