Greatness

To get a man soundly saved it is not enough to put on him a pair of new breeches, to give him regular work, or even to give him a University education. These things are all outside a man, and if the inside remains unchanged you have wasted your labor. You must in some way or other graft upon the man's nature a new nature, which has in it the element of the Divine.

Salvation

The profession of a prostitute is the only career in which the maximum income is paid to the newest apprentice. It is the one calling in which at the beginning the only exertion is that of self-indulgence; all the prizes are at the commencement. It is the ever-new embodiment of the old fable of the sale of the soul to the Devil. The tempter offers wealth, comfort, excitement, but in return the victim must sell her soul, nor does the other party forget to exact his due to the uttermost farthing.

Name: William Booth Birth Date: April 10, 1829 Death Date: Place of Birth: Nottingham, England Place of Death: England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: humanitarian, evangelist William Booth Main Biography The English evangelist William Booth (1829-1912) founded the Salvation Army, an international Christian organization for philanthropic and evangelical work. William Booth was born near Nottingham on April 10, 1829. As a youth, he was apprenticed to a pawnbroker, but after a conversion experience he began street preaching for a Methodist chapel. In 1849 he went to London, where he worked as a pawnbroker. Three years later, however, he became a full-time Methodist lay preacher. In 1855 he married Catherine Mumford, an intelligent and determined woman. Encouraged by her in his theological studies, Booth was ordained a minister in 1858. Booth's theology was simple and unchanging. He drew both his beliefs and his basic practice from the model set by John Wesley a century earlier. His creed required no systematic theological learning. He held that without personal acceptance of Christ as his Savior, the sinful man would die into eternal damnation. Although the opportunity for acceptan.....

Booth, William

God's salesman
WILLIAM BOOTH was the most successful evangelist of the nineteenth century. In an age when travelling preachers counted their conversions - and used their weekly totals to advertise for new work - Booth certainly topped the performance league. And, although he never descended to such commercial practices himself, he took great pride in his unparalleled talent for saving souls. But his importance was the world he took as his parish. The poor were his natural congregation and, at least in his early days, the only people who listened to his sermons were the men and women to whom the Church would not reach out.
People have said that he poked his umbrella into the ground and talked to it, like a man mad, to attract a crowd. Others asserted that he was so striking in appearance, and eloquent in speech that he would not have needed such a device.

William Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829 in the terraced house in Sneinton now preserved as No.12 Notintone Place. His father, Samuel Booth, a nail-maker by trade was unable to come to terms with the world of machines and mass production which had made him redundant. He tried to set up a number of building companies but recurring trade recessions ruined him. "Make money", he said to his son, and died a bankrupt. Booth's mother was stern and unaffectionate. Life for William and his four sisters was not easy.

William Booth was born in Nottingham, England in 1829, the son of a nail-maker. From an early age, he was very concerned about the living conditions of the poor people around him. He became a Methodist minister, and believed that all ministers should help the needy. He was such an inspirational speaker that people flocked to see him wherever he preached.
The two were married in 1855. In 1865, with six children and a seventh on the way, they started the Christian Mission in one of the worst areas of London. Their goal was to spread the word of God and help the poor. It was hard and dangerous work. After one year the mission had 60 converts, but William Booth would often come home with torn clothes and bandages on his head, having been beaten and stoned by locals who wanted the mission closed.

Booth led boldly with his big bass drum (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?) The Saints smiled gravely and they said: "He's come." (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?) Walking lepers followed, rank on rank, Lurching bravoes from the ditches dank, Drabs from the alleyways and drug fiends pale Minds still passion-ridden, soul-powers frail: Vermin-eaten saints with mouldy breath, Unwashed legions with the ways of Death (Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?)

Every slum had sent its half-a-score The round world over. (Booth had groaned for more.) Every banner that the wide world flies Bloomed with glory and transcendent dyes. Big-voiced lasses made their banjos bang, Tranced, fanatical they shrieked and sang: "Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?" Hallelujah! It was queer to see Bull-necked convicts with that land make free.

Booth's daughter Evangeline (1865-1950), who also had a long and successful career with the organization, persuaded the U.S. government to allow women in the "Army" to serve overseas during World War I. President Wilson awarded her the Distinguished Service Medal for her war work. After a series of leadership roles, Booth became the Salvation Army's first woman general in 1934.
