April 1, 2004 A pair of astrophysicists announced today that April Fools' Day is more intense on Mars than on Earth. The astrophysicists said they plan to reveal more details on the severe Martian April Fools' phenomenon in a peer-reviewed journal. In the meantime the pair have published information on the Astronomy Picture of the Day Web site. The tongue-in-cheek announcement was made by Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell, the creative forces behind the Astronomy Picture of the Day Web site. Each day the nine-year-old Web site posts an image from space, together with a description of its relevance, for the world to see. Nemiroff and Bonnell started their Web site in 1995, practically the dawn of the Internet. Now more than a million people take a gander at the site each week. A mirror site translates the Web site into ten languages. The site's archive is said to contain the largest collection of annotated astronomy images in cyberspace. Last May, Nemiroff and Bonnell published a book

What would happen to us if a gamma-ray burst occurred nearby in our own galaxy? Read on if you dare. A Bad Day in the Milky Way
by Jerry Bonnell

For me, one of the compelling ironies borne of discoveries in astronomy over the past few decades is the contrast between the detection of planets outside our solar system, which has fueled speculations about life beyond Earth, and the discovery of perhaps the most violent, inhospitable events in the universe gamma-ray bursts which have fueled speculation about a conceivable end to life on Earth.
Unlike the detection of extrasolar planets, for which astronomers were actively searching, the discovery of gamma-ray bursts sudden unpredictable flashes of high-energy photons coming from space was serendipitous. In the 1960s, the U.S. Air Force launched a series of satellites designed to verify the conditions of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, whose signatories, including the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union, agreed not to test nuclear devices in the atmosphere or in space. Called Vela, from the Spanish verb velar ("to watch"), the satellites bore experimental detectors intended to give the U.S. a means to monitor nuclear bomb tests. In a 1973 publication, Ray Klebesadel, Ian Strong, and Roy Olson of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory announced that Vela gamma-ray detectors had indeed picked up high-energy gamma-ray flashes but they originated not from Earth but from deep space.

If a burster exploded within, say, 3,000 light-years of Earth, our prospects would not be rosy. A Bad Day in the Milky Way
Back to Part 1

How much ozone would be destroyed? Thorsett estimated that if the burster were located near the center of our galaxy, some 30,000 light-years away, the ozone depletion would be a few percent, comparable to that produced by natural disasters like large volcanic eruptions, very intense solar flares, or even a meteor impact on the scale of the one that exploded over Tunguska, Siberia in 1908.
If the burster were closer, say less than 3,000 light-years away, the gamma-ray flux received in a few tens of seconds could wipe out the entire ozone layer for years to come. At the very least, the drastic increase in solar ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth's surface would cause severe skin cancers. For humans and other animals, slow starvation would likely result, as the harmful ultraviolet flux inhibited plant growth and damaged and altered ecosystems supporting the food chain. As in a nuclear winter, the nitric oxides darkening our skies could also cause acid rains and significant cooling of the Earth's surface. Such pollutants would take decades to settle out of the stratosphere.
In the false-color gamma-ray all-sky map at left, a burster suddenly appears, briefly overwhelms all other celestial gamma rays, then vanishes. The graph at right shows the burst as it was detected by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory.

  • To a large extent, people's interest in astronomy is due to the beautiful images we are now almost accustomed to seeing. Probably the best place on the web to find such stunning images is the Astronomy Picture of the Day , where Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell put pictures they have culled from many thousands on the web, along with a short easy to understand explanation of the science behind the picture (as well as lots of links). This is a great place to start a web browser, and they archive every image so that you can take your time looking through the Universe.

but NASA researchers have concluded that they may originate from at
least two different types of cosmic explosions.
Dr. Jay Norris of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.,
analyzed several hundred gamma-ray bursts, mysterious flashes of light
more powerful than any known explosion other than the Big Bang. He
found that the shorter bursts, lasting less than two seconds, have
different characteristics than longer bursts, and that the difference
is like night and day: Bursts just under two seconds and just over two
seconds appear completely different. The characteristics of the short burst and the abrupt change after two seconds suggest that the two types of bursts may come from very different types of sources. Norris presents these findings today at a press conference at the meeting of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The characteristics of the short burst and the abrupt change after two seconds suggest that the two types of bursts may come from very different types of sources. Norris presents these findings today at a press conference at the meeting of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Gamma-ray bursts can appear from any direction without warning and may last only a few milliseconds to just over a thousand seconds. Orbiting satellites have indicated several occur per day, on average. In their brief moment of glory, the bursts outshine the entire Universe in gamma rays before fading to oblivion. Scientists conjecture that the bursts come from merging compact objects such as black holes or neutron stars or perhaps from a massive star explosion, called a hypernova.
A single gamma ray burst might comprise thousands of gamma-ray photons (particles of light, in this case, high-energy gamma rays). Norris and his colleagues Drs. Jeffrey Scargle (NASA Ames Research Center) and Jerry Bonnell (NASA Goddard) examined gamma-ray burst time histories. These time histories are composed of gamma-ray pulses, a group of photons arriving at about the same time.
