, editor of the Ladies' Home Journal. In 1870, when Edward was six years old, the Bok family left a comfortable life in the Netherlands to immigrate to the United States. When his family suffered financial reverses, Edward quit school after six years to go to work. By his early teens, however, he was visiting and corresponding with famous literary, religious, and political figures, including presidents of the United States. And before the age of twenty, this born entrepreneur was publishing a magazine and syndicating articles nationally. In 1889, Bok accepted an offer from Cyrus H. K. Curtis to become editor of the Ladies' Home Journal; the two built the Journal into the world's most widely circulated magazine. During Bok's reign, from 1889 to 1919, the Journal led the industry, making many innovations, including high-quality illustrations and printing techniques, a different cover for each number, and extensive marketing research. In addition, the Journal 's policy of reporting accurate circulation figures served as the basis for new federal regulations in this area.

Welcome to Floridata's portrait of Bok Tower Gardens, one of America's most unique and beautiful landmarks. We hope our Fact Track to this historic and cultural treasure will inspire you to visit in person.
My First Introduction...
I first discovered The Singing Tower as a toddler. There it was, in all of its pastel glory, illuminating several postcards in grandma's souvenir stash drawer. I can still recall Sunday evenings spent gazing at postcard souvenirs from previous Florida vacations. I drooled (literally) at pastel images of water skiing pyramids at Cypress Gardens and the even more exotic mermaids of Weeki Wachi Springs. But most fascinating of all was the Singing Tower! Resplendent in the water-colored photographs, the tower looked like something from a fairy tale. Nearly twenty years later I finally encountered the Singing Tower in person discovering it to be even more magical than I had imagined. It could indeed serve as a stage that would do any fairy tale proud (hmmmm, Repunzal comes to mind!) These days I visit Mr. Bok's masterpiece whenever I have the chance, I hope this web page encourages you to do the same. - John Scheper 9/7/99 History
In 1869 the young Edward William Bok (1863 - 1930) arrived in Brooklyn, New York from den Helder, in the Netherlands. At 13 he quit school to assist his struggling family working as an office boy and free lance writer. He wrote reviews and edited a church newspaper. By the age of 22, his company, Bok Syndicate Press, was selling women's features to newspapers. In 1889, at 25 he was hired as the editor of the very popular women's magazine

The Americanization of Edward Bok
The Autobiography of a Dutch Boy Fifty Years After by Edward William Bok (1863-1930) To the American woman I owe much, but to two women I owe more,
My mother and my wife.
And to them I dedicate this account of the boy to whom one gave
birth and brought to manhood and the other blessed with all a
home and family may mean. An Explanation This book was to have been written in 1914, when I foresaw some leisure
to write it, for I then intended to retire from active editorship. But
the war came, an entirely new set of duties commanded, and the project
was laid aside. Its title and the form, however, were then chosen. By the form I refer First Page Next Page Last Page Read ... Titles Menu

Be forewarned: Man and money cannot remain together forever. Either the money is taken from the man, or the man is taken from the money. Money-worship, like idol worship, stems from a lack of trust in God. The more it is uprooted the more the world radiates with the blessing of the Holy One's love. Volume 4, No. 1 Fall, 2003 From the President: I was very fortunate to be able to continue my work as a budding historian at the Roosevelt Study Center (RSC) a newly founded institute for American history in Middelburg, Zeeland. This institute started in 1986 to collect primary sources on twentieth-century America, Dutch-American relations, and the Roosevelts, making them available to European students of U.S. history. In the mid-1980s American Studies boomed in Europe and the need for these sources became evident. While working for the RSC, I simultaneously did my research for my Ph.D. at Leiden Frequent research trips to the United States have enabled me to attend a few AADAS conferences and present papers. I started to do research on the area where my Center is located, the province of Zeeland, and organized an exhibit to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the founding of Zeeland, Michigan, and made a number of good friends on the west side of the Atlantic Ocean. While a fair number of Dutch scholars have done research on immigration to the United States in the past (Pieter Stokvis, Rob Kroes, the late Henk van Stekelenburg, Annemieke Galema, Lucas Ligtenberg), most of them are no longer active in this field. (Continued on page 2 Advance Notice
My plans for AADAS entail four priorities. First, to strengthen the visibility of the organization by publishing the proceedings, thereby putting the results of our common effort in many more hands. During my stay at Hope College, I found at least ten articles in the past six AADAS volumes that greatly helped my own research (check my footnotes when my book is ready!). By the time you read this, the publication date of the 2003 proceedings is close by. Second, I hope we can broaden the scope of AADAS to include more colleges as conference hosts. I am delighted that Dordt College agreed to host the 2005 meeting. It would be great if we could also reach out to the Canadian institutes with Dutch roots. Third, it is necessary to catch and keep the
