My Melungeon Heritage: A Story of Life on Newman's Ridge
...
Choctaw Genesis, 1500-1700
Bunch The first Bunch in Melungeon territory (various spellings) was apparently “Trader” John Benge, born about 1735 in Albemarle Co., Va., died about 1800 probably in Georgia. Benge had both a Cherokee and white family, like many of the Coopers, Gists, Beans, Blevinses, Wallings, Wards, Stuarts, Martins and other Jewish merchants of the time. His son by Wurteh (Gurty, a nickname for Margaret), the daughter of Great Eagle, or Willenewah, of Tasagi Town, was the outlaw Chickamauga chief Bob Benge, who probably was responsible for the entry of the word “binge” into the English language. Also known as Captain Bench, and The Bench, he was born in Toqua Town and died on April 9, 1794 in Stone Gap, Va., after being tracked down by a local posse. Wurteh went on to marry Nathaniel Gist, the father of George Guest (Sequoyah, born about 1771 near Fort Loudon). Benges married into the Brown, Lowrey, and Watts families around Chattanooga.
Bundren
The Bundrens of Sand Mountain raised several large families near Henegar before packing up, lock, stock and barrel, and moving to Kansas in the 1880s. Their original land purchase goes back to Claiborne’s purchase in DeKalb Co., Ala. Aug. 19, 1842 (Section 14, Twp. 9, Range 10E; see Lebanon Land Office Receipt SG 4535). Before leaving Tennessee for Alabama, James Bundren, born 1810 on the James River in Virginia, married Sarah Redwine in the McMinnville home of the Coopers – a clue to religious practices. They are the author’s great-great-grandparents. Because of their dark complexions, the Bundrens were accused by many on Sand Mountain of being black.

98. The Mississippi Durants
This was about the same time that Nathaniel Folsom came to the Choctaw. overland from Bogue Chitto, Neshoba County to Chickasaw Bluffs on the Yazoo
http://marciesalaskaweb.com/durant.htm
T here were few white people among the Choctaw and other tribes in the area at the time Nathaniel Folsom made his home among them. Besides the Choctaw, there were Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Seminole and other tribes living in this area of the country. There were, however, some Frenchmen who settled in among them at some time. The names of the most well-known of the Frenchment were Durant, LeFlore, Battiest, Colbert, Moncrief, Duford and Duer. Two of those names became well-known among the Choctaw. One French-Canadian "Cour du Bois" (trapper, woodsman, trader) named Louis Durant came down the Mississippi River to the Choctaw with Michael and Louis LeFlore. Durant brought several head of cattle with him, and they settled in the Yazoo Valley area of Mississippi among the Choctaw in 1770-1775. This was about the same time that Nathaniel Folsom came to the Choctaw. Louis Durant's cattle created quite a stir. The Choctaw had never seen cattle before, and they were fascinated! Many stories were told for years about what some had done when they first saw cattle. Before many years passed, however, a lot of Choctaw were raising cattle. Each of the three Frenchmen married full-blood Choctaw women, settled into life in the midst of these Indians and began to raise families. Louis Durant had a full life among the Choctaw; he married She Ni Yak, a Choctaw, and he raised three strong sons (Pierre, Charles and Lewis), along with two daughters, Margaret and Cillen (or Syllan or Sillen) . He built a large home high atop a bluff overlooking the Big Black River in Yazoo County, and he helped the Choctaw with advice when they had growing problems dealing with the U.S. Government. Louis Durant (along with the LeFlore brothers) were adopted into the Choctaw Tribe. Durant was adopted into the Hanaka Iska Clan. He was highly respected by the Choctaws for his help and for his honesty. He was paid for his work on the treaty negotiations of 1826.

War of 1812 Bounty Land Warrants and Pensions War of 1812 Military Bounty Land Warrants, 1815-1858. M848. 14 rolls. DP. This microfilm publication reproduces 105 bound volumes containing two series of military bounty land warrants issued between 1815 and 1858 to veterans of the War of 1812, and 4 volumes of indexes to the warrants. The first series of warrants resulted from acts passed December 24, 1811 (2 Stat. 669), January 11, 1812 (2 Stat. 672), and May 6, 1812 (2 Stat. 729), in which Congress provided that noncommissioned officers and soldiers serving for 5 years (unless discharged sooner), or their heirs, would be entitled to 160 acres of land from the public domain in partial compensation for military service. A total of 6 million acres of land were to be surveyed and reserved for this purpose, 2 million acres in each of the territories of Michigan, Illinois, and Louisiana (present-day Arkansas). The second series resulted from an act of December 10, 1814 (3 Stat. 147), by which Congress doubled the acreage offered to soldiers enlisting after that date. Warrants issued under this act were called double bounty warrants.
