NOVELLE VENTOTTO DI MESSER GIOVANNI BOCCACCI SCELTE ORA LAPRIMA VOLTA DAL SUO DECAMERONE...
Giuseppe Comino, Padua: 1739 pp. (24), 255, (1) + Engraved frontis portrait. Woodcut initials, head and tail-pieces. Sm. 8vo. Damp stained. Old spineless vellum. Edited and with a Preface by Anton Federigo Seghezzi (d. 1745), this collection includes an important description of the Pestilence that struck Florence in 1348. This edition is apparently not in Haym nor Gamba. Boccaccio was one of the greatest of Italian poets. He was born in Certaldo or in Florence to an unknown woman and Boccaccino di Chellino, a wealthy merchant. He abandoned a career in banking with his father. At Naples (1328) he attended the lessons of Cino da Pistoia (jurist-poet and friend of Dante and Petrarch), and took up the study of canonical law.
He mingled in courtly and scholarly society, and turned to story-writing in verse and prose. In Paris, Florence, and Naples he indulged his humanistic interests in classical literature and also composed his first vernacular poetry. In 1350 he met Petrarch in Florence, and began his life as an ardent soldier in the cause of 'the new learning'. Around the same time he moved to Padua where he joined the court of Louis of Bavaria as Ambassador from the city-state of Florence. Later he served Florence (and humanism) as ambassador to many other Courts.
His works are immortal. The 'Teseide' was partly translated by Chaucer in the 'Knight's Tale' and the 'Filostrato' (dealing with the loves of Troilus and Cressida), was also in great part translated by Chaucer. His passionate love for the noble lady 'Fiammetta' made her name famous. The 'Decameron' his great collection of love tales "will be read as long as men have eyes."

Abstract
This paper examines the author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) who is one of the influential thinkers and a literary figure of the Middle Ages. The paper points out that his depiction of the medieval society is one of the best and most accurate among the other medieval writers. The author reveals that "Decameron", written around 1350 during an outbreak of the plague in Florence, is a fictional account of 10 young people who flee to a country manor and begin telling stories to keep themselves occupied and diverted from the tragedy.

I was from Italy, and I lived from 1313-1375. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? My influences included 'Dante'. Italian novelist, b. in Paris, 1313; d. in Certaldo, 21 December, 1375. His father, a merchant from Certaldo and a man of some prominence in Florence, had gone into business in Paris. Shortly afterwards the elder Boccaccio deserted Giannina, the mother of Giovanni, and brought the boy to Florence where he put him to school until he was ten years old, when he took him into business.
In 1327 Giovanni was sent to Naples to study law. But he gave himself up almost entirely to literature, and became intimately acquainted with some of the most prominent men and women of the court of Anjou. It is supposed that it was in 1334 that he saw for the first time Maria d'Acquino, a married woman and natural daughter of King Robert. She was the inspiration of his earlier works, and the heroine of whom he tells under the name of Fiammetta.

can be ranked alongside Dante and Petrarca as one of the three great Italian literary figures of the 14th century who were also prominent on the European Scene. He can be distinguished from them, however by his greater concentration on earthly themes and subjects and his relative disinterest in moral, religious, theological and political issues. Boccaccio's greatest work is "The Decameron", a collection of 100 tales linked in a narrative framework, where he masterfully portrays different characters and their various passions, thus creating a vivacious image of life in all its many facets.
